The couple

Ann is an 22-year-old account coordinator for an advertising agency.

Sam is a 26-year-old chiropractor who recently graduated from chiropractic school and moved back to his hometown of Sioux Falls.

They each decided it was worth giving a blind date a shot to see if there’d be a connection and, at the very least, get a good story to tell.

“I just kind of wanted to try it and see how it goes,” Sam said.

Neither had been ax-throwing before, so they went in blind to both each other and the experience they were about to have.

Food & drink

Their date started at the bar at JJ’s Wine, Spirits & Cigars, where they each ordered a craft beer.

Conversation came easily, Ann said, and their server even joined in to share his depth of knowledge on the bar’s special cocktail offerings.

After a lesson on drinks, and empty beer glasses, the pair asked their server to surprise each of them with a specialty cocktail.

“It was fun how excited he was to give us things to try out,” Ann said.

They also split a chicken alfredo pizza with sun-dried tomatoes and spinach, which Sam said was both tasty and good to share.

The entertainment

After drinks and pizza, Ann and Sam moved over to JJ’s Axes & Ales for a lesson in ax-throwing.

They learned not only how to throw axes but also got a chance to throw ninja stars, knives and even learned some tips for trick shots.

“One of the guys was a super, super helpful instructor. … He taught you how to throw and step, and he could tell you if it was landing too high, you were releasing too early,” Ann said.

Having that extra guidance was helpful to Sam, too, who said that although he’s not super competitive, he appreciated having some guidance.

Ann had a different account of the competition level than her date.

“We were competing,” she said. “I scored 21 before he scored one.”

In their own words

What did you think of JJ’s bar as a date spot?

Ann: It’s a cool place. … One of my favorite parts of it was how knowledgable our server was about the cocktails and stuff.

Sam: It was just a good little environment. … We could have a good conversation and get to know each other.

What about ax-throwing?

Sam: Both of us had never thrown axes, didn’t know what we were doing. They coached us, and that was cool.

Ann: You’re your own entertainment. It’s kind of fun to be able to laugh at that, but it’s casual enough that it’s not anything rigorous but still kind of active and fun.

Will there be a second date?

Ann: It was a super fun experience, but I don’t know if we were quite the best match.

Sam: Either way, it was fun.

What would you say to someone else considering going on one of our blind dates?

Ann: If you like to try something new and have a fun surprise to spice up your life, go for it.

Sam: It’s a good opportunity. … There’s very little downside. What’s the worst that could happen?
