Construction season is here, so we’re back with our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.

What’s underway

Cliff Avenue: The Cliff Avenue closure at the Interstate 229 interchange is scheduled to be complete, and Cliff Avenue should reopen to one lane of traffic in each direction late Tuesday or early Wednesday this week.

Cliff Avenue has been closed since last week to allow crews to perform underground utility work.

Other work in progress includes installing structural supports for the new northbound bridge on I-229 and grading work along I-229.

After Cliff Avenue reopens to traffic, one lane of traffic in each direction will remain open until the project is complete.

The northbound on-ramp and northbound off-ramp for I-229 at Cliff Avenue remain closed.

All lanes are expected to be complete and open to traffic by November. Final cleanup work and restoration will take place in the spring of 2027.

South Veterans Parkway: Crews continue to make good progress on the South Veterans Parkway project between Cliff and Sycamore avenues.

Most of the concrete paving work is complete between Sycamore and Southeastern avenues.

Crews are working on concrete paving between Southeastern and Cliff avenues.

Other work now includes barrier walls on the bridge over the railroad tracks east of Cliff Avenue, asphalt paving and grading.

This project is expected to be substantially complete and all lanes open to traffic in November.

Final cleanup work and restoration will take place in the spring of 2027.

12th Street: The outside eastbound lane and outside westbound lane of 12th Street closed west of Grange Avenue on June 12 to allow crews to complete bridge maintenance work. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained in each direction at all times. This work is expected to be complete in approximately two weeks.

Asphalt overlay program

Asphalt overlays are a street maintenance method that extends the life of an asphalt street at a fraction of the cost of reconstruction. They sometimes are used over concrete streets as well when traditional concrete repairs are not cost-effective.

An asphalt overlay generally consists of milling, or grinding, the top 2 inches of asphalt off a street and replacing it with a new 2-inch layer of asphalt.

The asphalt overlay provides a new wearing course at the surface of the street and improves the ride experienced by motorists.

Areas receiving an asphalt overlay often have curb and gutter repairs, spot utility repairs and accessible curb ramp improvements performed in advance of the overlay.

Streets generally remain open to traffic during the concrete and utility work. However, during paving operations, streets are closed and traffic detoured accordingly.

The overlay program is focused mostly on neighborhood streets, but major streets scheduled for an asphalt overlay this year are:

  • 60th Street North between Cliff and Lewis avenues.
  • 26th Street between Sertoma Avenue and Marion Road.
  • Marion Road between Silver Valley Drive and Birnhamwood Drive.
  • 69th Street between Louise Avenue and Landau Circle.
  • Intersection of Russell Street and Louise/Westport avenues.

This year, the city will be milling and overlaying more than 220 blocks of streets around the city. An interactive map showing current status, upcoming schedule and frequently asked questions is available at siouxfalls.gov/overlay.

What’s next

69th Street: Beginning today, lane closures will be in place on 69th Street from Louise Avenue to Landau Circle to allow crews to mill and overlay the street. One lane of traffic will remain open in each direction throughout the project, but the location of the lane closures will vary as construction progresses. This work is expected to be complete in about two to three weeks.

41st Street: Beginning today, the eastbound lanes of 41st Street will be closed between Westport and Kiwanis avenues to allow crews to perform bridge maintenance work. Once work is completed in the eastbound lanes, the lane closures will shift to the westbound lanes of 41st. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained in each direction at all times. This work is expected to be complete in about one to two weeks.

57th Street: Beginning today, the eastbound lanes of 57th Street will be closed from Ellis to Marion roads to allow crews to allow crews to perform crack sealing work. Once work is completed in the eastbound lanes, the lane closures will shift to the westbound lanes of 57th. One lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction at all times. This work is expected to be complete in about one to two weeks.

Sycamore Avenue: Beginning today, the southbound lanes of Sycamore Avenue will be closed from 57th to 69th streets to allow crews to perform crack sealing work. Once work is completed in the southbound lanes, the lane closures will shift to the northbound lanes of Sycamore. One lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction at all times. This work is expected to be complete in about one to two weeks.

Cliff Avenue: Beginning today, the outside southbound lane of Cliff Avenue will be intermittently closed between Otonka Trail and 49th Street to allow crews to replace a driveway. This work is expected to be complete in approximately three weeks.

41st & Veterans: Beginning today, no left turns will be allowed at the intersection of 41st Street and Veterans Parkway between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to allow crews to complete concrete pavement repairs in the center of the intersection. These daily left turn restrictions are expected to remain in place until Wednesday. One lane of through traffic will be maintained at all times. Motorists wishing to turn left at this intersection should proceed to the next available intersection. Work along Veterans between 26th and 41st streets will be ongoing through July.

Main Avenue: Beginning today, the sidewalk along the west side of Main Avenue will be closed between 11th and 12th streets to allow crews to perform stair repairs at the Washington Pavilion. Pedestrians will be detoured around the work zone and will be able to access the east entrance of the Washington Pavilion from 11th Street. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.

57th Street: Beginning today, the north sidewalk along 57th Street will be closed between Bahnson and Sycamore avenues to allow crews to perform underground utility work. Pedestrian traffic will be detoured to the south sidewalk. This work is expected to be complete by the end of the day.

Russell & Louise/Westport: Beginning on Tuesday the intersection of Russell Street and Louise/Westport avenues will be closed nightly to allow crews to perform asphalt paving work. Louise/Westport will be closed daily at Russell from 6 p.m. until 6 a.m. Russell will be closed daily between Louise Drive and Kiwanis Avenue from 9 p.m. until 6 a.m. Motorists should use Interstate 29 as an alternate route for Louise/Westport. Russell traffic will be detoured on Kiwanis, Madison Street and I-29. These nighttime closures are expected to be in place daily until 6 a.m. Friday.

I-90 open house: The South Dakota Department of Transportation will hold a public meeting open house on from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. June 24 to inform area residents of the proposed Interstate 90 grading, surfacing and structure replacement project in Sioux Falls. The proposed I-90 project runs from Interstate 29 to Cliff Avenue and east of Interstate 229. The open house will be held at the Special Olympics South Dakota Unify Center located at 800 E. I-90 Lane. The meeting will be informal, allowing for one-on-one discussions with design staff. A short presentation will take place after 5:30 p.m.
