Road Report: May 4, 2026
Construction season is here, so we’re back with our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.
What’s underway
Arrowhead Parkway: Concrete paving took place Friday on the east side of the Arrowhead and Veterans parkways intersection.

Arrowhead Parkway remains closed east of Veterans Parkway and is expected to reopen to traffic in late May.

Motorists should use Madison, 26th or 41st streets as alternate routes.

20th Street: Work is underway on 20th Street between Cliff and Seventh avenues through the Avera McKennan campus.

Crews have completed water main installation at 20th Street and Cliff Avenue and are working on repaving the intersection to fully reopen it to traffic within the next few weeks.

The pavement has been removed throughout the project, and crews are working on installing new water main and sanitary sewer on 20th west of Cliff. 20th Street is restricted to one-way westbound traffic only between Cliff and Ninth avenues. Motorists are required to access 20th from Cliff to get to their destination along 20th.

Access to Avera McKennan’s emergency room is not impacted, but motorists are strongly encouraged to use 17th or 26th streets to access the emergency room entrance off of Seventh Avenue.

Work on this project is expected to be complete in November.
Marion Road: Work has started on a new bridge over the railroad tracks on Marion Road between Memory Lane and 84th Street North/259th Street.

The contractor is working on clearing the site, removing the topsoil and doing other preliminary work. Water main installation and rammed aggregate pier construction will begin soon.

The rammed aggregate piers essentially are compacted stone or rock columns that need to be installed because of the poor soil strength in this area.

They will support the weight of the earth embankment that eventually will be brought in to raise the roadway up so a bridge can be constructed over the BNSF Railway tracks.

Marion Road is closed between Memory Lane and 84th Street North/259th Street. Work on this project is expected to be complete in late 2027.

What’s next
12th Street: Beginning today, the outside eastbound and outside westbound lanes of 12th Street will be closed near Grange Avenue to allow crews to complete bridge repairs. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained in each direction until late May, at which time traffic will be reduced to one lane of traffic in each direction for approximately three weeks. Work on this project is expected to be complete in late June or early July.
Minnesota Avenue: Beginning today, the outside southbound lane of Minnesota Avenue will be closed between 21st and 22nd streets to allow crews to perform concrete work. One lane of southbound traffic will be maintained. Northbound traffic will not be impacted. The west sidewalk also will be closed. Pedestrian traffic will be detoured west to Spring Avenue. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.
Maple Street: Beginning today, the east leg of the intersection of Veterans Parkway and Maple Street will be closed to allow crews to perform asphalt paving work. The traffic lanes on Veterans will not be impacted. Maple traffic should utilize Rice or Madison streets as alternate routes. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.
I-29: Beginning on Tuesday, southbound Interstate 29 will be reduced to one lane of traffic near Interstate 90 to allow crews to perform concrete repairs. All ramps will remain open. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.
Louise Avenue: Beginning on Tuesday, the outside southbound lane of Louise Avenue will be closed between 49th and 53rd streets to allow crews to complete sidewalk improvements. One lane of southbound traffic will be maintained in the inside southbound lane. Northbound traffic will no longer be impacted. This is the last of two phases of the project, which includes sidewalk improvements on both sides of Louise. This work is expected to be complete by the end of May.
Dakota Avenue sidewalk: Beginning on Tuesday, the sidewalk along the east side of Dakota Avenue will be closed between 11th Street and the west entrance of the Washington Pavilion to allow crews to perform work associated with the Pavilion’s garage expansion project. Pedestrian traffic will be detoured to the sidewalk on the west side of Dakota. This work is expected to be complete in October.
