Good news: It just got easier to renew your South Dakota driver’s license

If you’ve had to renew your driver’s license any time lately, you’ve likely experienced a tight schedule to reserve a slot and longer wait times once you walk in the door.

“More population growth means more need for driver license services,” said Jeannelle Yitagesu, driver licensing assistant director for the state of South Dakota.

Today, the state takes a big step toward alleviating those waits: a new express station in the Kings Crossing building on the northeast corner of 69th Street and Minnesota Avenue.

That’s the same building where Anytime Fitness is located.

The express station is the first of its kind in the state, designed “to make it easier for many people to take care of their driver license service,” Yitagesu said. “This is all about good customer service.”

The location is designed for those who need any driver’s license service that doesn’t require testing.

“That means if you need to renew your driver’s license, transfer your out-of-state license to a South Dakota license, if you are a student who has completed driver’s education in the last year or need to get a new identification card or renew your current identification card, this is the station for you,” Yitagesu said.

If you need to do actual testing for your license, you can do that at the other Sioux Falls station at 2501 W. Russell St.

The new express station will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays. Applications must be submitted by 4 p.m.

“Those with driver license and identification cards can also renew online, schedule an appointment online or walk into any exam station,” Yitagesu said. “The bottom line is that this is about helping people in several different ways take care of their driver license and identification card needs.”
