7 tips for cavity prevention
This piece is sponsored by Neighborhood Dental.
A healthy smile doesn’t just look good — it helps you feel your best every day. Cavities are one of the most common dental problems for both children and adults, but the good news is they’re also preventable!
At Neighborhood Dental, there are eight convenient locations across Sioux Falls and the surrounding communities, and our teams are passionate about helping families protect their teeth with easy, practical habits. Continue reading to discover seven expert tips from local dentists and hygienists to help you and your loved ones maintain cavity-free teeth year-round.
What is a cavity?
A cavity is a permanent hole in your tooth caused by tooth decay. When sugars and starches in the food you eat mix with bacteria in your mouth, they form acids that attack your enamel — the strong outer layer of your teeth. Over time, this weakens your tooth structure and creates decay.
Can cavities be reversed?
Here’s the truth: Once a cavity has formed, it cannot be reversed — only treated by a dentist with a filling or restoration. However, early stages of tooth decay — weakened enamel without a hole yet — can sometimes be stopped or even repaired with professional fluoride treatments, improved oral hygiene and a healthier diet. That’s why prevention and regular checkups are so important. You can read more on Neighborhood Dental’s latest blog, “Early-Stage Cavities: 5 Ways to Stop and Reverse Tooth Decay.”
1. Brush twice a day — the right way
Two minutes, twice a day, using a soft-bristle toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste makes a big difference. Don’t forget to reach those back teeth where cavities often sneak in. Neighborhood Dental also recommends using a fluoride toothpaste. At your next dental office visit, be sure to ask about professional fluoride treatments.
2. Floss like a boss
Flossing isn’t just about removing food — it clears away plaque where your toothbrush can’t reach. Daily flossing prevents bacteria buildup between teeth.
Bonus tip: Consider adding a Waterpik to your routine. A Waterpik uses a gentle stream of water to flush away food and plaque, making it especially helpful for patients with braces, implants or sensitive gums. It’s not a replacement for string floss, but when paired together, they create a powerful combo for healthier teeth and gums. Neighborhood Dental sells these at select locations.
3. Limit sugary snacks, drinks
Frequent snacking on candy, juice or soda feeds the bacteria that cause cavities. Try swapping in water, cheese or crunchy veggies as smile-friendly alternatives.
4. Choose water over soda
Water rinses away food particles and keeps your mouth hydrated. Bonus: Most tap water in South Dakota contains fluoride, which naturally strengthens your enamel.
5. Don’t skip dental checkups
Regular visits to your dentist — every six months — allow for early detection and treatment, before cavities turn into bigger issues. Plus, professional cleanings remove buildup you can’t reach at home.
6. Consider dental sealants
Especially for kids, dental sealants provide a protective coating on molars where grooves and pits often trap bacteria and are applied in seconds. Sealants prevent the most cavities when applied shortly after permanent molars erupt. Typically, children tend to get their first adult molar around the age of 6. These molars are different as they can grow undetected and are unnoticed. Dental sealants have been shown to reduce the risk of decay by almost 80 percent in molars. Needless to say, it’s one of the easiest ways to prevent childhood cavities.
7. Make it fun for kids
Cavity prevention doesn’t have to be boring! Use colorful toothbrushes, play their favorite song while brushing, or reward good brushing habits with a sticker chart. Building healthy habits early makes a big difference later.
Protect your smile, protect your health
At Neighborhood Dental, we believe prevention is the best medicine. By following these tips and visiting your dentist regularly, you’ll save yourself pain, time and money, while keeping your family’s smiles bright and healthy.
