Winter Carnival cancels some events because of cold

You know it’s cold when it’s too cold for parts of the Sioux Falls Winter Carnival.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Sioux Empire, organizer and beneficiary of the event, is canceling Saturday’s Frosty Fitness event at Fawick Park and the Family SnowFest at Spellerberg Park.

In addition, as a result of the forecasted single-digit temperatures the remainder of the week, the pop-up ice rink set to open in the Avera parking lot in downtown Sioux Falls will not be opening at this time.

“We’re disappointed that we are unable to proceed with some of our events,” said Rebecca Wimmer, CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs.

“Keeping in mind the safety of families, our staff and volunteers is always at the forefront of these decisions, and with wind chill forecasted for well below zero, it simply becomes too dangerous.”

The plan is to open the ice rink at some point — the carnival goes through Feb. 14 — and the Boys & Girls Clubs will promote winter-themed indoor activities on its social channels at @sfwintercarnival and on sfwintercarnival.com.
