Summer is a great time to get outside and have fun.

Whether you’re taking a hike or celebrating with friends, these tips can help ensure you stay safe and healthy.

  1. Wear sunscreen

Wearing sunscreen plays a crucial part in keeping your skin healthy this summer. Practice wearing sunscreen every day with an SPF of at least 30 to keep your skin safe and protected.

  1. Hydrate

Drinking water is a healthy habit year-round. However, the summer heat can make it more difficult to keep your body hydrated. Drinking water consistently throughout the day or keeping a water bottle with you can help combat dehydration.

  1. Practice water safety

Cooling off at the pool or lake is a great way to get outside in the summer. Practicing water safety is crucial at any age. For younger kids, ensure they are wearing a well-fitted life jacket and accompanied by a supervising adult. If you are out on a boat or other watercraft, be prepared with a life jacket even if you are an adult.

  1. Practice fire safety

Fireworks and campfires are highlights of summer; however if not done safely, they can result in dangerous situations. Know how to properly light and dispose of fireworks. It is also important to know when it is too hot and dry to light fireworks or a bonfire. The dry heat can make it more difficult to put out the fire when needed.

  1. Eye protection

Sunglasses are a fun fashion accessory anytime of the year, but when the sun is blazing, it is important to wear proper eye protection. Wear sunglasses that block harmful UV rays to help keep your eyes healthy. Wearing eye protection when setting off fireworks also can keep you safe from firework-related injuries.

  1. Eat healthy

Healthy eating is important throughout the entire year, but the summer months bring fresh fruits and veggies into season. Eat foods with high water content like watermelon to help refresh and hydrate your body when it needs it the most.

  1. Know the signs of heat-related illnesses

Summer is a great time to enjoy the sun and be outside. However, too much fun in the sun can lead to heat-related illnesses. Knowing what signs to look for when you are outside will help prevent illnesses.

  • Wear light-colored clothing to keep your body cool.
  • Take frequent breaks to rest in the shade and rehydrate.
  • Know your and your loved ones’ limits when it comes to the heat.
  1. Wear a seatbelt

Summer vacations and holidays can mean travel by car. Wear a seatbelt at all times to keep everyone safe. For the little ones, make sure they are in a secure car seat so they can enjoy the summer drive too.

  1. Practice safe food preparation

Summertime brings barbecues, picnics and lots of time to eat outside. When planning a meal in the summer, make sure you practice food preparation safety.

  • Keep cold foods cold and hot foods hot; avoid food between the temperature of 40 and 140 degrees.
  • Wash your hands frequently and effectively.
  • Don’t cross-contaminate; always change out your knives and cutting boards when prepping raw meat.
  1. Have fun

Even though the summer heat can make it difficult to enjoy the sunshine, get creative with your summer activities. Embrace the air conditioning with a fun summer movie or have your kiddos help prepare a fresh, summertime snack.
