The week ahead: June 5-11
The Week Ahead is our hand-picked event guide to the next seven days in Sioux Falls and slightly beyond. For guaranteed placement or to promote your event ahead of time, email [email protected] about a featured event listing.
June 5: Farmers market
Thursday is opening day and Forever 605 Day at the Lake Lorraine Farmers Market. From 4 to 7 p.m., you’ll be able to pick up vegetables, baked goods, meats, poultry, eggs, and arts and crafts. This is the city’s only west-side farmers market. It takes place in the parking lot between Hobby Lobby and Dave & Buster’s on Lake Lorraine’s east side.

June 5: Art showcase
The Lot is an independent art show series at DaDa Gastropub, 402 N. Main Ave., this week and on July 31, held on the patio and right inside the garage door entry. This week, it will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Artists keep 100 percent of their profits and don’t have to pay to participate. The restaurant also will be open from 5 to 10 p.m. with happy hour from 5 to 6 p.m. Reservations are available here.

June 6: Bike ride
Saddle up, so to speak, for the First Friday Mountain Bike Ride, hosted by Sioux Falls Bicycle Company, 1740 S. Cliff Ave. It will start at 6 p.m. Friday.

June 7: Art showcase
“True Colors,” an exhibition celebrating life’s strength, identity and uniqueness, will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Serendipity Studio, 230 S. Phillips Ave., Suite 204. A percentage of each piece of art sold will be donated to Sioux Falls Pride. It also will be open on 12 other days during the month.

June 7: Fireworkz Store Pyrotechnic Musical Extravaganza
Get ready to light up the start of summer with a dazzling evening of fireworks, music and community spirit— all for a good cause. The annual Fireworkz Store Pyrotechnic Musical Extravaganza returns Saturday at the Tea Athletic Complex. The free show begins at sunset and will include a freewill offering to benefit Emily’s Hope, a local nonprofit dedicated to ending the stigma of substance-use disorder, providing prevention education and helping those seeking treatment and recovery.

June 10: Teaching about gardens
The Minnehaha Master Gardeners will answer garden questions the second Tuesday of each month through October at the Mary Jo Wegner Arboretum. Their eight beds in the Teaching Garden are filled with asparagus, rhubarb, strawberries, tomatoes, peppers and other vegetables. Bed managers will be on hand to answer questions. Admission is free.

June 12-14: Neighborhood rummage
The Rustic Hills Rummage bills itself as the largest organized rummage sale event on Sioux Falls’ east side. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, more than 50 sales will be posted. The area includes Sycamore to Highway 11, from 26th to 41st streets. Individual hours may vary, but it will begin at noon Thursday and end at 8 p.m. Saturday.

Coming up: June 21
Registration is open now for four-person teams interested in taking part in the first Hobby Horse Relay, hosted by Big Lost Meadery & Brewery on June 21 at Lake Lorraine’s Lake Walk. It’s a fundraiser for McCrossan Boys Ranch. Registration costs $80 and includes four drink tickets to Big Lost. You must be 16 to participate, but drinking alcohol is not required as part of the competition. Your hobby horse can be homemade, a stick horse or something like a broomstick or mop. Prizes will be awarded. The event is a 1-mile relay around the lake and includes jousting, barrel racing, limbo and yard dice.
