Jan. 18: Rock ‘n’ roll

Want to learn more about the history of rock ‘n’ roll in your own backyard? The Minnehaha County Historical Society has lined up Brian Wheeler, John Mogen and Michael Cornette for its January history talk. The topic? “The History of Rock and Roll in South Dakota.” The event will begin with a social time at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, followed by the talk at 7 p.m. at the Old Courthouse Museum.

Jan. 19: Fun for adults

Thunder Road Entertainment is hosting an Adults Night Out with unlimited arcade play, laser tag, mini bowling, hyper-bowling, bumper cars and 7D theatre for $29. It will begin at 7 p.m. Friday. Add access to the new Omni arena for $4. Drink specials, pizza by the slice, soft pretzels and other snacks will be available. This is an 18-and-older event.

Jan. 20: Music for a good cause

The Johnny Holm Band will take the stage at 8 p.m. Saturday at The District, 4521 W. Empire Place. Doors will open at 7 p.m. All proceeds from the concert, presented by Alpine Cares, will go to Call to Freedom, Mission-Haiti, The Community Outreach and other local organizations. Tickets are available at this link. They will not be sold at the door. This is a 21-and-older show. Remember, Johnny is known as “the facilitator of fun.”

Jan. 21: Ice cream

If there’s a teenager in your life who is an ice-cream connoisseur, then go to this link to register them for an ice-cream competition hosted by Siouxland Libraries. It will run from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Downtown Library. Teens will invent their own ice cream and compete against their peers.

Jan. 23-28: Livestock show

The Sioux Empire Livestock Show, sponsored by the Greater Sioux Falls Chamber of Commerce, will begin Tuesday and run through next week. You can find all the details here. The show’s culmination is the Mayor’s Round-Up and Sale of Champions at 5 p.m. Jan. 26. Business leaders from across the community gather to show their support for the ag industry by participating in a dinner, livestock auction and silent auction. The program features a presentation of the Supreme Champion bull and heifer from the week’s purebred shows, an auction of the best market livestock and recognition of the Farm Family of the Year, Jeff and Nancy Kirstein of Lennox, and Agribusiness Citizen of the Year, Phil DeGroot of The First National Bank in Sioux Falls.

Upcoming: Jan. 27

Operation HopeFULL is an arts and crafts show where local artists come together to raise money for school lunches. The money raised Jan. 27 will go into a fund to pay off delinquent lunch accounts. The event will include artists, live music, live painting, silent auction and, from 3 to 4 p.m., a special kids show. Operation HopeFULL will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Museum of Visual Materials, 500 N. Main Ave.
