Aug. 4-8: Airpower History Tour

Maverick Air Center is hosting the Airpower History Tour this week at Joe Foss Field. Events include a Plane Pull, showcases from historic military planes like the B-29, which was flown in World War II, and even the option to go up in the air. Runway tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children age 11-17 and include cockpit tours. You can purchase tickets here.

Aug. 5: Yappy Hour

Kirby Dog Park downtown will be hosting another Yappy Hour leading up to National Dog Day, which is Aug. 26. From 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Yappy Hour will feature an obstacle course, supplies to create dog toys and an opportunity for both dogs and their humans to make new friends and socialize.

Aug. 6-8: Sioux River Folk Fest

The South Dakota Friends of Traditional Music is hosting the Sioux River Folk Fest this weekend after its cancellation last year. As usual, the event will be hosted at Newton Hills State Park. Music will be played the evening of Aug. 6, all day Aug. 7 and the afternoon of Aug. 8 from over 15 performers. Weekend passes are $40, but day passes vary in price — $20 for Friday night, $30 for Saturday and $10 for Sunday. Children younger than 14 are free. Tickets can be bought at the gate or online at sdfotm.org.

Aug. 6: Eastbank Block Party

The monthly Eastbank Block Party is happening in its usual location at the 8th & Railroad Center. Performers include the Guilty Pleasures Orchestra, which specializes in ’70s and 8’0s hits, instrumentalist duo Two White Squares and Indianapolis native Nathan Barrow. Food trucks, retail and other vendors will operate from 5:30 to 11 p.m.

Aug. 6: Free Family Friday at Drake Springs

Free Family Friday will be hosted again at Drake Springs Family Aquatic Center. Family swim is extended, and there will be water games, yard games and more. Admission is free, no registration is required, and the event will take place from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Aug. 7: St. Joseph Cathedral Auction

A public auction will be held at the St. Joseph Cathedral beginning at 10 a.m. The event will take place in the Cathedral school gym and will feature items such as antique furniture, Notre Dame collectibles and paintings. The event will be run by auctioneer Chuck Sutton and all proceeds will go to the Cathedral.

Aug. 8: Bees and Beer

The Good Earth Farm near Lennox will host the Bees and Beer event from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. The Hunny & Bunny food truck will be there, as well as Queen Bee beer from Remedy Brewing Co. Of course, you also can purchase honey from the farm and other hives across the state and even try a flight of honey. Get details here. 

Aug.10: Feeling Fishy

Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation will be hosting the Feeling Fishy event at Kuehn Park Pool. The event includes the opportunity for kids to design and create a fishbowl. Then, they’ll get to fish out their very own goldfish. Registration costs $18.78 and includes the cost of supplies. The event will take place at 10 a.m., and you can register at register.siouxfallsparks.org.

Aug. 5-14: Sioux Empire Fair

The Sioux Empire Fair starts Thursday. Performances from Old Dominion on Aug. 5, Hairball on Aug. 8 and Randy Hauser on Aug. 10, among others, will hit the grandstand. There will be carnival rides and games, 4-H events and other attractions all week.
