The week ahead: Aug. 10-16
The Week Ahead is our hand-picked event guide to the next seven days in Sioux Falls and slightly beyond. For guaranteed placement or to promote your event ahead of time, email [email protected] about a featured event listing.
Aug. 10: Change your look
We’re all familiar with the name and logo for Super 8 economy hotels. Now Super 8 by Wyndham, as it’s properly known, is kicking off its upcoming 50th anniversary celebration by giving out free makeovers. The offer is inspired by the chain’s recent $100 million renovation. Free consults, cuts and styles from professional stylists are available on a first-come, first-served basis from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday. Guests, S8 team members and the public are welcome.

Aug. 11: Trailgating Festival
A Trailgating Festival open to all ages will run from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Great Bear Recreation Park. It will be an evening of outdoor family fun with yard games, bouncy obstacle courses, a self-guided photo scavenger hunt, nature crafts, food trucks, a campfire with s’mores and live music. Looking for a challenge? Bean-bag tournament registration starts at 5:30 p.m. with the tournament at 6 p.m. Pre-registration is recommended. Prizes will be awarded.

Aug. 12: Dairy Dash
Undeniably Dairy will host the Dairy Dash at Good Earth State Park on Saturday. This free 1-mile fun run or walk is for children age 2 to 10 and is part of 605 Running Company’s first 605 Trail Race & Festival, which also offers 4- and 8-mile races for people 11 and older. The 1-mile course will feature educational stops and interactive activities for children who want a break during the dash. After the race, parents and kids can treat themselves to dairy products at the event festival. Vendors, giveaways and interactive activities celebrating dairy will be available. Families and children interested in participating in the Dairy Dash can register for free here.

Aug. 12: Princesses and superheroes
You can celebrate heroes, villains, princesses and, well, just about anything you want to from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Kirby Science Discovery Center at the Washington Pavilion. Dress like your favorite superhero or princess for the day. You’ll learn how to develop your own superhero utility belt, take the princess engineering challenge and more. You also can have your picture taken with your heroes from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Aug. 13: Goat yoga
Join the Yakkity Yak Coffee Shack for an evening of goat yoga at 25638 487th Ave. in Garretson. Tickets are $20 and will be purchased upon arrival. This is a fundraiser for the Yaks Give Back Foundation. You should arrive at least 20 minutes early to ensure the activity starts on time. Yoga mats will be provided or you may bring your own.

Aug. 16: Documentary at the State
A documentary filmed in South Dakota, “Lakota Nation vs. United States,” will be on the big screen at the downtown State Theatre at 7 p.m. Wednesday. It is described as “a searing testament to the strength of the Oyate and a visually stunning rejoinder to the distorted image of a people long shaped by Hollywood.” You have two other chances to see it too: 2 p.m. Aug. 19 and 1 p.m. Aug. 20.
