School news of the week: Basketball buddies, art week, ‘golden moments’

We love the “golden moments” program at Lowell Elementary. Kids earned a coin for this book vending machine when they create “golden moments” at school. These ladies helped out a friend in need on the playground or in the classroom.

Eugene Field Elementary students spent their first few art classes learning about the Lascaux Caves that even included a virtual field trip. Then, students took inspiration from the “Hall of Bulls” and created their own “Hall of Eagles” inspired by the beautiful, ancient art.

This was National Arts in Education Week. Students at John Harris Elementary in grades K-4 made a leaf for this tree and 5th grade students made a flower that is part of a set of butterfly wings. Then their teachers helped pull it all together.

Fun day for Fred Assam Elementary students! More than 60 future Brandon Valley Lynx spent time with seven high school players who helped them improve their basketball skills.

Way to go, Scheels. The store held a month-long sock drive in August where community members were encouraged to donate new pairs of socks to be distributed to the Sioux Falls School District. The community and Scheels employees donated an incredible 392 pairs in just one month! The socks will be distributed across the schools.

The Sioux Falls School District’s “Senior Spotlight” this week featured Lincoln High School‘s Ashton Dorman. She’s a championship-caliber softball player, an Advanced Placement scholar, a peer tutor, and a coach. She’ll play softball at Augie next year where she’ll be majoring in biochemistry.
