Road Report: Oct. 2, 2023
Construction season is here, and so is our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.
What’s underway
Every four years, the city of Sioux Falls undergoes a pavement management survey and analysis by a third-party vendor that determines the overall condition of city streets.
The next survey is set to start this week and will take five to seven weeks. During the survey, residents may see a white van with equipment driving city streets.

The van uses advanced technology to assess each pavement section. Once the survey and analysis are complete, the company contracted to do the work, Roadway Asset Services, will give the city a pavement condition index score. The PCI is a ranking assessment of the overall health of a pavement segment on a scale of 0 to 100. In 2015 and 2019, the last two times the city completed a pavement survey, the score was 70, which is categorized as “very good.”
Following this year’s assessment, a full report will be given to the city next year for its use in future street construction planning. This year’s pavement survey will assess 905 centerline miles of city-maintained asphalt and concrete roadways.
Western & I-229: Work continues at the Western Avenue and Interstate 229 interchange.

The northbound on-ramp from Western to I-229 should be complete and open to traffic in mid-October.

Work on the Western Avenue bridge will be complete in November.

Marion Road & Highway 130: Crews are making progress on Marion Road and Minnehaha County Highway 130, or 258th Street.

Paving is taking place on Highway 130.

After paving is complete, crews need to add rumble strips, striping and perform final grading in the ditches before reopening Highway 130 in mid-to-late October.

Crews also are prepping the gravel on Marion Road to begin paving in the next few weeks.

All work on this project will be complete in November.
57th Street: Work is almost complete on 57th Street east of Veterans Parkway.

A little bit of sidewalk installation remains to be completed.

Crews also are working on the topsoil, seeding, landscaping and streetlight wiring.

After these items are complete, the striping will be added before opening the street to traffic in late October.

What’s next
Louise Avenue: Beginning today, the outside northbound lane of Louise Avenue will be closed between 57th and 49th streets to allow crews to perform sidewalk repairs. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.
Ralph Rogers Road: Beginning today, Ralph Rogers Road will be closed just east of Western Avenue to allow crews to perform street and utility work. Ralph Rogers traffic should use 57th or 69th streets as an alternate route. This work is expected to be complete in about four weeks.
Lewis Avenue: Beginning on Wednesday, Lewis Avenue will be closed north of Benson Road to allow crews to install concrete pavement. Lewis traffic should use Potsdam Avenue as an alternate route. Lewis Avenue is expected to reopen to traffic in about three weeks.
Bahnson Avenue: Beginning on Wednesday, Bahnson Avenue will be closed at 60th Street North to allow crews to perform asphalt repairs. Traffic should use Rice Street to access Bahnson during construction. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.
