Construction season is here, so we’re back with our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.

What’s underway

 41st Street: Work is progressing on the sidewalk improvement project along 41st Street between Western and Westport avenues.

The contractor currently is working along 41st between Western and Kiwanis avenues. Construction will continue moving west along 41st until all work on the north side is complete.

Crews then will shift to the south side of 41st Street and proceed east from Westport Avenue back to Western Avenue. Work along 41st  is expected to be completed by mid-June.

Following that, additional sidewalk improvements will take place along Minnesota Avenue between 11th and 18th street as part of this project. Work along Minnesota is anticipated to be completed by mid-August.

Cliff & I-229: Work continues on the reconstruction of the Cliff Avenue and Interstate 229 interchange, a joint project between the South Dakota Department of Transportation and the city of Sioux Falls.

The contractor has completed removal of the southbound I-229 bridge and is removing pavement on the interstate.

Pavement removal between 41st Street and Pam Road is complete, and underground utility work is underway.

Water main installation on 41st Street has been completed, and storm sewer work is in progress.

Pavement removal on the west side of Cliff Avenue is scheduled to begin this week.

Cliff will remain open to traffic until the end of the school year, after which it will be fully closed until August. The project is expected to be substantially complete by late 2026, with final completion anticipated in early 2027.

Cliff Avenue: Rehabilitation work has begun on Cliff Avenue between the Big Sioux River bridge and Tomar Road.

The contractor currently is performing full- and partial-depth concrete patching, as well as curb and gutter repairs in the southbound lanes.

Saw cutting  also has started at Tomar and is progressing to the north.

The project also will include the replacement of accessible curb ramps and diamond grinding of the completed pavement to ensure a smooth and uniform driving surface. Completion is anticipated later this fall.

41st Street: 41st Street closed April 30 at Second Avenue to allow crews to perform storm sewer repairs and the addition of traffic calming bump-outs. Detour traffic control will be in place. Weather permitting, this work is anticipated to be completed in one week.

What’s next

Shirley Avenue: Beginning today, the northbound outside lane on Shirley Avenue will be closed between 34th and 41st streets. The contractor will be performing directional drilling. This work is anticipated to be completed by the end of the day on Wednesday.

41st Street: Beginning this afternoon, 41st Street between Broek and Lana drives is scheduled to reopen to traffic. Until then, traffic should continue using the temporary detour on Ellis Road, 12th Street and 466th Avenue.

Prairie Trail Park: Beginning today, construction improvements will begin on the walking trail at Prairie Trail Park. The existing asphalt trail will be replaced with a concrete trail between Sawgrass Circle and Tomar Road.  Areas of the park not impacted by the project will remain open. Visitors are urged to use caution and avoid construction areas. The improvements to Prairie Trail Park are anticipated to be completed by June 13.

Ninth Street: Beginning on Tuesday, the westbound outside lane of  Ninth Street with be closed between Mall and Phillips avenues to allow crews to perform sidewalk repairs. Motorists will be allowed to turn right onto Phillips from the adjacent lane. Weather permitting, this work is anticipated to be completed within three days.
