Road Report: May 16, 2022
Construction season is here, so we’re back with our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.
What’s done
Tallgrass Avenue: Tallgrass Avenue between 74th and 85th streets has reopened. Minor work is still taking place outside the roadway.
49th & Sycamore: 49th Street east of Sycamore Avenue has reopened.
What’s underway
41st Street: Temporary intersection closures on 41st Street west of I-29 will continue through the end of May to allow crews to install underground utilities and reconstruct the street surfacing. Temporary closures of Terry Avenue, Cathy Avenue and Gateway Boulevard at 41st will alternate; only one intersection will be closed at a time. Marion Road south of 41st will remain closed for several more weeks.
Arrowhead & Six Mile: Work began May 10 on the Arrowhead Parkway and Six Mile Road reconstruction project. Initial work will consist of clearing, grading and underground utility work outside of the existing roadway. Traffic will not be impacted until early summer to midsummer.
54th Street North: Work began May 12 to repair the railroad tracks on 54th Street North west of Fourth Avenue. 54th Street North is closed at the railroad tracks. Work is expected to be completed in about one week.
Fourth & Ash: Work began May 12 to remove the concrete island at Fourth Avenue and Ash Street. No right turns are allowed from Fourth onto Ash during this work. This project is expected to be complete in about one week.
49th Street: The first major concrete pour of the season took place May 13 on 49th Street between Western and West avenues.

This project is extending 49th from Western to West this year.

49th Street eventually will be extended all the way to Minnesota Avenue, but this won’t be completed until the I-229 and Minnesota Avenue interchange is reconstructed in 2025 or later.
What’s next
Cliff Avenue: Beginning today, the northbound outside lane of Cliff Avenue will be closed between 26th and 33rd streets to allow crews to perform asphalt patching.

On May 17, the southbound lanes of Cliff will be closed between 26th and 33rd streets to allow crews to work on concrete repairs.
One lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained in the northbound lanes. This work will be completed later this summer. The work on 26th at Cliff should be completed late this week or early the following week.

Western & 49th: Beginning today, the southbound right turn lane on Western Avenue at 49th Street will be closed to allow the installation of new traffic signal equipment at the northwest corner of the intersection. This closure is expected to last about two days.
42nd Street: Beginning today, the west leg of 42nd Street will be closed at Sycamore Avenue to allow crews to perform concrete repairs. Motorists should use 41st or 49th streets as an alternate route. This work is anticipated to be completed in approximately two weeks.
Westport Avenue: Beginning Tuesday, Westport Avenue will be closed between Sencore and Cherry Hill drives. Motorists should utilize Career Avenue as an alternate route. This work is expected to take about two days.
