Construction season is here, so we’re back with our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.

What’s underway

Arrowhead & Six Mile: Work continues on the Arrowhead Parkway and Six Mile Road reconstruction project. The contractor is working on the sanitary sewer along the Arrowhead frontage road.

Crews also are working on sidewalk along Six Mile Road and storm sewer inlets along Arrowhead just east of Six Mile Road. On April 28, the intersection at Arrowhead and Six Mile closed to southbound traffic. The north side of the intersection will remain open to traffic and will not be affected by this closure.

A detour will be installed around the project using Veterans Parkway and 26th Street to Six Mile Road south of the intersection. Access will be maintained to local traffic throughout the project.

The closure is designed for the grading and graveling of the intersection in preparation of placing concrete surfacing. The intersection will be fully reopened to traffic on Friday. To learn more, find the project summary, timeline and maps for this project on the SDDOT website.

Wayland Avenue: On April 27, Wayland Avenue closed south of 31st Street North to allow crews to work on utility taps. This work is anticipated to be completed by Friday.

Sixth Street bridge: Work continues on the Unity Bridge and Sixth Street project in downtown Sioux Falls.  The contractor poured concrete for Abutment No. 5 modifications.

Joint utility trenches, which will carry various public and private utilities, are continuing to be installed.

The contractor is waterproofing piers from above the waterline to the bottom of the channel. The waterproofing is called a special surface finish, which is a crystalline waterproofing coating to protect the piers from damage from the river.

This preventative maintenance treatment should extend the life of the piers by preventing water intrusion and deterioration.

Benson & I-229: Work continues on the Benson Road and Interstate 229 interchange reconstruction project. On the west side of I-229, removals have begun on the northside of Benson Road.

On the east side of I-229 along Benson Road, crews have started on grading, storm sewer and watermain work. Utility work will continue for the next few months. Bridge work will begin when private utility relocation has been completed. This project is expected to be complete in June 2025.

57th Street: Work continues on the 57th Street project from Veterans Parkway to Six Mile Road.

Crews are finishing up a box culvert at the intersection with Veterans and will be starting on the storm and sanitary sewer along 57th.

The project is anticipated to be complete this fall.

41st Street: Work has started on the ADA accessibility improvements project along 41st Street. Crews are working on sidewalk on the north side of 41st between Minnesota and Grange avenues for the next several weeks. Westbound traffic is reduced to one lane.

The work will include reconstruction of accessible curb ramps, landings, fillet sections, sidewalks with corresponding driveway restoration and concrete curb and gutter repairs.

The project is expected to be completed in late July.

What’s next

33rd & Minnesota: Beginning today, crews will be performing concrete repairs in the middle of the intersection of Minnesota Avenue and 33rd Street. Westbound traffic through the intersection will be reduced to one lane from Dakota to Spring avenues, and the left-turn lane for northbound traffic will be closed. Weather permitting, this work is anticipated to be completed within one week.

Benson & Fourth: Beginning today, crews will be performing concrete pavement repairs in the intersection of Benson Road and Fourth Avenue. There will be lane closures on both Benson and Fourth. Eastbound left-hand turns will not be allowed during construction. Weather permitting, this work is anticipated to be completed within one week.

51st Street: Beginning today, the north side of 51st Street will be closed approximately 400 feet east of West Avenue. Alternating traffic will be allowed through the open lane. Crews will be working on new utilities. This work is expected to take approximately one week.

Yeager Road: Beginning today, sanitary sewer manhole replacement work will begin along Yeager Road from 26th to 33rd streets. Traffic control will be in place. This phase of the project is planned to be completed by mid-June.
