Construction season is here, so we’re back with our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.

What’s underway

57th & Graystone: Not surprisingly, last week’s rain was challenging for construction, but the work on the 57th Street and Graystone Avenue intersection improvement project continues to make progress.

The south side of the intersection has been completed, including new sidewalks and ADA ramps.

This week, the contractor will begin working on the north half of the intersection. The project involves adding traffic signals to enhance safety and accommodate increased traffic related to development.

The paving portion of the project is expected to be completed by mid-July, and the installation of the traffic signals is projected to be finished by mid-May 2025.

Minnesota Avenue: Work has begun on ADA accessibility improvements along Minnesota Avenue.

Crews are working on the east side of Minnesota between 26th and 33rd streets. Saw-cutting also has begun between 18th and 26th streets.

Removals are anticipated to begin this week depending on weather.  As work is completed between 33rd and 26th, traffic control will be pulled back.

The project includes installing ADA accessible sidewalks, restoring corresponding driveways and repairing concrete curb and gutter. The work will progress north to 18th Street.

During the project, traffic will be reduced to one lane where work is taking place. Once the east side of Minnesota Avenue is completed, the contractor will move to the west side of the street. The project is scheduled to be completed by mid-November.

Old Orchard Trail: Old Orchard Trail closed at Kincade Avenue on June 19 to allow the contractor to install new utilities. This work is expected to be complete in one week.

Cliff Avenue: The outside northbound lane and right turn lane on Cliff Avenue just before 69th Street closed June 20 to allow the contractor to install new utilities. This work is expected to be completed in one week.

What’s next

Sertoma Avenue: Beginning today, Sertoma Avenue from 26th to 41st streets will be closed to allow crews to perform road maintenance work. This work is anticipated to be completed by 7 p.m. Wednesday.

57th Street: The closure of the outside westbound lane of traffic on 57th Street between Sycamore and Florence avenues was scheduled to begin June 19 but was delayed because of weather. The closure will begin today to allow crews to work on additional improvements to the intersection of 57th Street and Graystone Avenue. The sidewalk along the north side of 57th Street between Bahnson and Sycamore avenues also will be closed, with pedestrian traffic detoured to the sidewalk along the south side of 57th. The work requiring the lane closure is anticipated to be complete by mid-July.

Bridge inspections: Beginning today, several bridges in the Sioux Falls area are slated for regularly scheduled biannual inspections. This work will entail lane closures to allow crews to use a snooper truck to inspect the bridges. Traffic will be maintained through the work zone. Weather permitting, the work schedule is as follows:

  • Today: 10th Street bridge, east of Second Avenue.
  • Tuesday: 60th Street North bridge, west of Minnesota Avenue.
  • Wednesday: Minnesota Avenue bridge, north of the airport.
  • Thursday and Friday: Veterans Parkway bridges, north of Rice Street.

Thompson Avenue: Beginning at 8:30 a.m. today, Thompson Avenue will be closed at 10th Street to allow crews to work on the intersection. Weather dependent, the intersection is expected to reopen by mid-July. The overall project is anticipated to be completed by mid-September.

I-90: Beginning today, crews will begin shoulder resurfacing work on Interstate 90 from Exit 390 east of Hartford to the Kiwanis Avenue overpass in Sioux Falls. The inside and outside shoulders in both eastbound and westbound lanes will be resurfaced. The project will include guardrail improvements from the 60th Street North overpass to 259th Street and include some work at Interstate 29. Additional work includes cold milling asphalt concrete, embankment resurfacing and new highway signs. Traffic will be reduced to a single lane in the work zone. The expected completion date is Nov. 1.

I-229 & 10th Street: Beginning Tuesday, the northbound Interstate 229 off-ramp at 10th Street for eastbound traffic will be closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to allow crews to work on the 10th Street overlay project. The ramp will allow westbound traffic on 10th Street. Weather dependent, this work is anticipated to be complete within five working days.
