Construction season is here, so we’re back with our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.

What’s underway

Cliff & I-229: Work on the Cliff Avenue and Interstate 229 interchange continues.

The underground utility work is nearing completion on Cliff Avenue.

Once that work is complete in the next week or so, grading work will take place along Cliff Avenue, followed by gravel placement and concrete paving on both 41st Street and Cliff in order to get at least one lane of traffic in each direction opened up by mid-August.

Work on the bridge piers also is taking place, with bridge girder placement expected later this summer or early this fall.

Grading work on I-229 is also in progress.

A separate city concrete repair project on Cliff Avenue from the south side of the interchange up to Tomar Road also is moving ahead.

The project is expected to be complete by mid-August.

The interchange reconstruction project won’t be fully complete until the spring of 2027.

South Veterans Parkway: Work also is continuing on South Veterans Parkway between Cliff and Sycamore avenues.

Grading work is still focused on building up the grade on either side of the railroad tracks between Cliff and Southeastern avenues so construction of an overpass can begin.

Work on a pedestrian underpass and underground utilities is in progress.

Sycamore and Southeastern avenues remain closed between 69th and 85th streets during construction.

This project is expected to be complete in late 2026.

Tomar Park: The west entrance and west parking lot of Tomar Park closed July 1 to allow crews to complete parking lot improvements. The east entrance, east parking lot and the recreation trail entrance have been reopened for public use. This is the final phase of the parking lot improvement project at Tomar Park, which is anticipated to be complete in mid-August.

What’s next

Minnesota Avenue: Beginning today, the outside southbound lane of Minnesota Avenue will be closed between 11th and 14th streets to allow crews to complete sidewalk improvements. This is the seventh of eight phases of the project, which includes sidewalk improvements on both sides of 41st Street from Western to Westport avenues and on Minnesota from 11th to 18th streets. This work is expected to be complete in mid-August.

Minnesota Avenue: Beginning today, the outside southbound lane of Minnesota Avenue will be closed between 24th and 25th streets to allow crews to remove an underground storage tank. This work is expected to be complete in about two weeks.

Louise Avenue: Beginning today, the inside southbound lane of Louise Avenue will be closed south of 85th Street to allow crews to replace a concrete panel. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.

Kiwanis Avenue: Beginning today, the outside northbound lane of Kiwanis Avenue will be closed near Sixth Street to allow crews to make utility repairs. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.

Cliff Avenue: Beginning today, the southbound lanes of Cliff Avenue will be closed between 26th and 38th streets to allow crews to perform diamond grinding on the concrete pavement. One lane of traffic will be maintained in both directions in the northbound lanes of Cliff through this work zone. In the upcoming weeks, the location of the lane closures on Cliff will vary between 26th and 38th streets. At a minimum, one lane of traffic in each direction will remain open. Access to side streets, businesses, parks and homes will be maintained. This work is expected to be complete in about two weeks.

Sycamore Avenue: Beginning today, Sycamore Avenue will be closed between Producer Lane and 60th Street North to allow crews to perform underground utility work. Traffic should utilize Producer, Wilcox Drive and Velocity Avenue as an alternate route. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.

Veterans Parkway: Beginning today, the outside northbound lane closure in place on Veterans Parkway between Sixth and Madison streets will be extended north of Madison to Maple Street to allow crews to continue to install sanitary sewer force main pipe. The recreation trail along Veterans Parkway in this area remains closed. The work between Madison and Maple streets is expected to be complete in about six weeks. The entire project is expected to be complete in November.

26th Street: Beginning today, 26th Street will be closed between Veterans Parkway and Six Mile Road to allow crews to rehabilitate a box culvert drainage crossing. Motorists should follow the signed detour via Veterans, 41st Street and Six Mile. This work is expected to be complete by the beginning of August.

12th Street: Beginning today, the outside eastbound lane on 12th Street will be closed at Sertoma Avenue and Valley View Road to allow crews to perform accessible curb ramp and signal improvements at these intersections. This work is part of the overall asphalt overlay project along 12th between Ellis and Marion roads. This phase of the work is expected to take about two weeks. The overall project will be complete in September.

12th Street: Beginning today, the outside eastbound lane of 12th Street will be closed just west of Ellis Road to allow crews to bore a casing pipe under 12th. This work is expected to be complete in about two weeks.

Cliff Avenue: Beginning on Tuesday, the outside northbound lane of Cliff Avenue will be closed near 21st Street to allow crews to perform utility work. Parking also will be restricted on 21st east of Cliff. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.

I-90: Beginning at 7 p.m. Wednesday, the eastbound and westbound lanes of Interstate 90 will be closed temporarily to divert traffic through the on- and off-ramps at Brandon, which is Exit 406. This traffic diversion will be maintained overnight until 7 a.m. Thursday. This traffic pattern switch is being scheduled to set forms for bridge decking. Lane closures and traffic diversions on I-90 at Exit 406 also are planned from 7 p.m. Thursday through 7 a.m. Friday. This second night of the scheduled traffic diversion is to install components to build the bridge deck. Traffic on Highway 11 will be maintained during these overnight traffic diversions. Flaggers will be posted to guide Highway 11 traffic because interstate traffic will not be stopped.  The overall project completion date is in June 2026.
