Construction season is here, so we’re back with our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.

What’s done

North Drive: North Drive in front of the South Dakota State Penitentiary reopened to traffic late last week.

What’s underway

Sycamore Avenue: Traffic switched to the new pavement on the east side of Sycamore Avenue at 41st Street last week. Crews are working in the northwest quadrant of the intersection on pavement removals and underground utilities. This project is expected to be complete later this fall.

Minnesota Avenue: The west side of Minnesota Avenue between Brookings and Second streets was paved late last week.

This project is still on track to have all lanes of traffic open later this fall. Landscaping work will occur next spring.

Cliff Avenue: Work on Cliff Avenue between 26th Street and Pam Road has shifted to the east side of the street.

The contractor is focusing on work in front of Lincoln High School now to ensure this segment is complete before school starts in August.

Cliff Avenue: Work on Cliff Avenue between 49th and 56th streets is still on track to have one lane of traffic open in each direction by the time school starts in August.

Underground utility installation is complete, and grading work is in progress.

What’s next

18th Street: Beginning today, the eastbound lane of 18th Street will be closed from Kiwanis to Garfield avenues to allow crews to perform concrete pavement patching. Eastbound traffic will use the center turn lane. The lane closure locations will vary as the work moves east toward Lake Avenue. One lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained at all times. Work is expected to be completed in five to six weeks with favorable weather conditions.

Phillips Avenue: Beginning on Tuesday, the northbound parking lane of Phillips Avenue between Sixth and Seventh streets will be closed to allow crews to perform concrete pavement repairs. As work progresses, the lane closures will move to the driving lane and the southbound lanes, with traffic being shifted around the work area. One lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction at all times during construction. Parking will not be allowed near the work area. All work is expected to be completed within two weeks with favorable weather conditions.

41st Street: Beginning on Tuesday, the westbound lanes will be closed on 41st Street between Copper Creek and Faith avenues to allow crews to work on underground utilities. One lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction in the eastbound lanes. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.

Arrowhead Parkway: Beginning Wednesday, Arrowhead Parkway will be closed to through traffic between Six Mile Road and 26th Street while the South Dakota Department of Transportation installs a box culvert. A detour will be established from Veterans Parkway to 26th Street. The project is expected to be complete by Oct. 5. Six Mile Road will remain closed both north and south of Arrowhead until mid-August.
