Road Report: July 15, 2024
Construction season is here, so we’re back with our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.
What’s underway
18th Street: East 18th Street closed between Tabbert Circle and Grandview Avenue on July 10 to allow crews to perform sanitary sewer repairs. Additional short-term lane restrictions on 18th Street between Interstate 229 and Sycamore Avenue also will be in place as the work progresses. Traffic on Bahnson Avenue will be maintained at all times. This work is expected to be complete in about two weeks.
85th & Sundowner: The intersection of 85th Street and Sundowner Avenue closed July 10 to allow crews to reconstruct the intersection as the first phase of a project to rebuild 85th between Sundowner and Heritage Parkway between Sioux Falls and Tea. Access will be maintained for local residents. This is a joint project between the cites of Sioux Falls and Tea. Work consists of underground utility installation, grading, asphalt and concrete surfacing and street lighting. Motorists are advised to use 69th Street in Sioux Falls, Heritage Parkway/Ellis Road and Gateway Boulevard in Tea as alternate routes. The intersection is anticipated to reopen to traffic in late November. The overall project will be complete in 2025.
Sixth Street: The westbound lanes of Sixth Street closed between Bahnson and Sycamore avenues July 10 to allow crews to perform concrete joint repairs, partial depth concrete repairs, and curb and gutter repairs. One lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained in the eastbound lanes. In the upcoming weeks, the location of the lane closures on Sixth Street will vary. At a minimum, one lane of traffic in each direction will remain open at all times. Access to businesses, parks and schools will be maintained. Access to side streets will be maintained when possible. This work is anticipated to be complete by mid-August.
57th Street: The outside westbound lane of 57th Street closed between Broadband Lane and Marion Road on July 11 to allow crews to perform sidewalk repairs. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.
Minnesota Avenue: The outside southbound lane of Minnesota Avenue closed between 18th and 26th streets July 11 to allow crews to complete sidewalk improvements. This is the third of four phases of this project, which includes sidewalk improvements on both sides of Minnesota from 18th to 33rd streets. The entire project is anticipated to be completed by August.<
10th Street: West 10th Street closed from Euclid to Menlo avenues July 12 to allow crews to continue with the second phase of the 10th Street/Pettigrew neighborhood street and utility project.

The first phase of the project on 10th Street between West and Euclid avenues remains closed. Traffic should use Ninth, 11th or 12th streets as alternate routes. This project began just after Memorial Day and will reconstruct 10th from West to Menlo avenues, Covell Avenue from 10th to 11th street, and Menlo from Ninth to 10th streets.
Work on this project includes underground utility improvements, concrete curb and gutter, asphalt paving, driveway approach replacement, accessible curb ramp upgrades and new street lighting.

The first phase of the project is expected to be complete in mid-August, while the second phase is expected to be complete in October. The overall project is expected to be complete in November.

Sycamore Avenue: Work on Sycamore Avenue north of Arrowhead Parkway is making good progress.

Concrete repairs on Sycamore between Arrowhead and Sixth Street are complete.

Work has shifted north and is focused on curb repairs on the west side of the street in front of Washington High School.

Later this summer, work will shift to curb repairs on the east side of Sycamore between Sixth and Madison streets.

Sycamore also will receive a diamond grind between Arrowhead Parkway and Sixth Street later this summer to improve the overall ride quality.

All work on this project is expected to be complete later this fall.
What’s next
12th Street: Beginning today, the outside westbound lane on 12th Street will be closed between Grange and West avenues to allow crews to perform retaining wall repairs. This work is expected to be complete in mid-August.
Cliff Avenue: Beginning Tuesday, the southbound and center turn lanes of Cliff Avenue will be closed from Chambers to Rice streets to allow crews to perform pavement repairs. One lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction in the northbound lanes. In addition, the sidewalk on the west side of Cliff from Rice to 31st Street North/Amidon Street will be closed. Pedestrian traffic will be routed to the east side of Cliff. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.
Cliff Avenue: On Saturday, Cliff Avenue will be closed from 57th Street to Libby Lane to allow crews to perform street maintenance work. Motorists should use Southeastern or Minnesota avenues as an alternate route. This work is expected to be complete by the end of the day.
