Road Report: April 25, 2022
Construction season is here, so we’re back with our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.
What’s done
Work on southbound Marion Road at Silver Valley Drive is done.
What’s underway
26th & Cliff: Work on concrete repairs at 26th Street and Cliff Avenue continues. The full-depth repairs are completed on 26th on westbound lanes. The partial-depth repairs need to be done before traffic can be restored on the westbound lanes. Northbound Cliff also is reduced to one lane at this time. This project consists of full-depth and partial-depth concrete repairs, accessible curb ramp improvements and minor underground utility repairs.
Minnesota Avenue: Work on Minnesota Avenue continues. A 42-inch gate valve was installed this week. This is the biggest water valve in the city’s distribution system. During peak summer usage, 18 million gallons of treated water per day will flow through this pipe. There are still two 42-inch gate valves to be installed on the project. The southbound turn lane along Russell Street onto Minnesota will be closed to tie the new pipe to the existing pipe.

Second Street: Work on Second Street continues. The street will be closed to traffic on the west side of Minnesota to allow the contractor to finish pavement removals and begin utility installation. This will affect traffic eastbound on Second turning south onto Minnesota. Second Street is expected to be closed until early July.
Tallgrass Avenue: Work continues on the sanitary sewer and water main on Tallgrass Avenue between 74th and 85th streets.

This street is a gravel road bordered by open fields and a rural residential subdivision.

This area of town is seeing an increase in development and traffic, and the city is installing the underground utilities ahead of a project to pave this segment of Tallgrass in 2023.

Sycamore Avenue: Curb repair work is being done on Sycamore Avenue between 28th and 57th streets. Intermittent lane closures will be set up to shift traffic to the inside lanes to accommodate curb work. Curb repairs are anticipated to be completed in two months.
Minnesota Avenue: Traffic striping work began late last week along Minnesota Avenue from 57th Street to St. Andrews Drive. Intermittent lane closures may be necessary during the striping installation. The work is set to be completed by the end of May.
Bailey Street: Sanitary sewer work is occurring on the northeast side of Veterans Parkway from Bailey Street to 500 feet to the southeast. Traffic along Bailey will be open to one lane of traffic in each direction. Work is anticipated to be complete by June.
What’s next
41st & Sycamore: Today, work will begin on the intersection reconstruction of 41st Street and Sycamore Avenue. One lane of traffic will be maintained in all directions throughout the duration of the project. During the first phase of construction, Sycamore traffic will be shifted to the west side of the street and 41st Street traffic will be shifted to the south side of the street. Access to local businesses will be maintained with at least one entrance off of 41st or Sycamore. The project is anticipated to be completed by early November.
Theodore Avenue: Beginning today, Theodore Avenue will be closed between 35th and Lancaster streets to allow crews to install drainage structures under Theodore. Work is anticipated to be completed within a month.
Cliff Avenue: Beginning today, the southbound outside lane of Cliff Avenue from 26th to 28th streets will be closed to allow crews to perform concrete repairs. This is an addition to the concrete repairs at 26th and Cliff. Work is anticipated to be completed in late May.
26th Street: Beginning today, the eastbound inside lane of 26th Street will be closed from the Interstate 29 interchange to Shirley Avenue to allow crews to perform joint resealing operations. Traffic will be maintained in the eastbound outside lane. The work is anticipated to be completed in one week.
69th Street: Beginning Tuesday, the outside westbound lane on 69th Street will be closed to the east and west of Ralph Rogers Road to allow crews to perform curb repairs and begin work to install new traffic signals. The project is expected to be completed in late summer.
Tallgrass & 85th: Beginning Wednesday, the intersection of Tallgrass Avenue and 85th Street will be closed to allow construction crews to upgrade utilities. This work is anticipated to be completed within two weeks.
