In first episode, ‘Down Home Fab’ shows ‘South Dakota glam’ design
The first of six Sioux Falls-area home renovations debuted on HGTV tonight in the first episode of “Down Home Fab.”

Featuring reality TV stars Chelsea and Cole DeBoer, the show went to Canistota, where they put a $100,000 budget to work renovating a home for their former wedding planner.

“I would describe my design style as very South Dakota glam,” Chelsea DeBoer says on the show.
“I love cowhides, painting things black, anything a little bit different.”
The Vermillion native has spent more than a decade in reality television, originally on the MTV show “16 and Pregnant,” followed by “Teen Mom 2,” which she left in 2020. She married DeBoer, a Sioux Falls native, in 2016, and they live outside Sioux Falls.
The couple gained a following as they shared the process of building their own home in 2020, and it led to the show, “showing clients how to go bold and think big with their design,” Chelsea said.
She serves as designer, and Cole serves as project manager.
The opening episode made several references to Sioux Falls, including showing the city skyline.

“The city of Sioux Falls has enough going on that it does feel like a larger city,” Chelsea says on the show. “I’m so glad we’re raising a family out here and starting a business.”
The next episode features the home of a Sioux Falls real estate agent. Other homes are in and around the city, including in Dell Rapids.
“HGTV is looking to highlight how wonderful of a state South Dakota is and how wonderful of an area Sioux Falls is,” Chelsea said in an interview with Pigeon605. “I think that’s cool because it is, and I’m so proud of our hometown and home state, and it deserves to be highlighted.”

The couple also worked with many area businesses in the renovations, including Pride Built Homes in Harrisburg, which built the DeBoers’ house, Thornton Flooring, Save Our Space and Mahlander’s Appliance and Lighting.
“That was big for us,” Cole said. “We wanted to work with as many local people as possible.”
The first house “I thought turned out amazing,” Chelsea said. “I really like the couple, they were so fun, and Cole knew her since he was a kid. It’s a big commitment from them, and it was a little nerve-wracking on us because the pressure is there. But it made us want to do even better and give them everything they hope and dream for.”
Each episode also features scenes from the DeBoers’ own home. In the premier, Cole builds their kids a playhouse designed to mimic the style of their larger home.

“Cole has always been handy and done DIY projects,” Chelsea said.
The DeBoers don’t know if there will be future episodes of “Down Home Fab” yet.
“We don’t know what’s next,” Chelsea said. “Hopefully, people love it. We’d love to continue doing this as long as possible, but the answer is we don’t know.”
