Growing partnerships foster inclusive workplaces for valuable employees

Each October, during National Disability Employment Awareness Month, or NDEAM, LifeScape takes the time to celebrate the incredible contributions of the people it supports who are working in the Sioux Falls area.
Jonathan Barrett is the lead of employment at LifeScape, where he has dedicated four years to enhancing the lives of those he supports.

His role emphasizes a careful balance of support and advocacy, both of which are crucial in empowering individuals to achieve their personal and professional goals. Barrett is particularly passionate about fostering a supportive environment, working alongside a team of dedicated staff to help individuals in the community thrive.
“I love seeing our community members gain extra independence and income, which not only fills funding gaps but also allows them to purchase what they want and live fulfilling lives,” he said.
Barrett sees NDEAM as a vital opportunity to recognize businesses that go above and beyond in their efforts to support individuals with disabilities.

“It’s an opportunity to acknowledge those actively seeking employment and celebrate their accomplishments,” he said. This celebration extends beyond mere recognition; it fosters a sense of community and encourages further collaboration between businesses and individuals.
Barrett believes that Sioux Falls is evolving into a more welcoming environment for individuals with disabilities.
“With the growth of businesses in the area, there’s a willingness to partner with LifeScape, creating more opportunities for our community members,” he explained.

This increasing openness is reflected in the growing number of partnerships LifeScape has formed with local businesses, creating a network of support that benefits everyone involved. Currently, LifeScape supports more than a dozen individuals in community employment, forging strong relationships with various businesses throughout the Sioux Falls area.
These partnerships not only provide job opportunities but also promote awareness and education about the value of inclusivity in the workplace. Barrett emphasizes that these collaborations are crucial for dismantling stereotypes and fostering a culture of acceptance and respect.
As we observe National Disability Employment Awareness Month, it’s essential to recognize and celebrate the efforts of individuals and organizations like LifeScape that are committed to fostering an inclusive workforce. Through advocacy, community partnerships and dedicated support, we can continue to break down barriers and create an inclusive environment for all workers, regardless of their abilities.
