The big cats at the Great Plains Zoo and Delbridge Museum of Natural History have tested negative for the virus that causes COVID-19 and will return to their exhibits for public viewing today.

The cats tested negative on two consecutive PCR lab tests, the zoo said in a statement.

The first Amur tiger to test positive did so Oct. 6. The following day, a snow leopard named Baya died of respiratory illness. Necropsy results on Baya confirmed she had died from pneumonia induced by the COVID-19 virus, and she did not have any other underlying condition.

The zoo’s veterinary staff reports that it has run consistent lab tests on the big cats throughout their illness, checking samples for signs of viral shedding. Lab tests confirm the animals are clear of the virus and can once again be in the exhibit space and viewable to the public.

“While we still grieve the loss of Baya, we are grateful for the other big cats to recover successfully from their COVID-19 infections. As representatives to their wild counterparts, these animals help promote appreciation and conservation of their species,” CEO Becky Dewitz said.

Staff interacting with COVID-19 susceptible species are required to wear personal protective equipment including N95 masks, gloves, booties and face shields.

“We ask our visitors to continue being proactive on social distancing and please stay home if you are not feeling well,” Dewitz added.

A SARS-CoV-2 vaccine made by Zoetis was recently approved by the USDA. Once that vaccine is received, susceptible animals at the zoo will be vaccinated to help prevent subsequent disease outbreaks.

Fall “is the ideal time to visit the big cats of GPZ as they are more active during cooler temperatures,” the zoo said.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily.
