From the ground up: How flooring can bring a fresh look for spring
This paid piece is sponsored by Montgomery’s.
Spring is coming – and your home likely is about to get sloppy.
Whether it’s rocks and pebbles, or dampness and mud, new flooring will hold up to the challenge – so now is a good time to consider investing in it.
“Newer flooring is more durable, resilient and even scratch-proof, so you don’t have to worry about your floors getting ruined, while you provide an update to your home you’ll love,” said Olivia Niggeling, flooring manager at Montgomery’s.
Niggeling is an expert when it comes to options for your flooring, from the latest in carpet to luxury vinyl plank and ceramic tile.
“At Montgomery’s, we start by talking to the customer to figure out your needs and wants,” she said.
“We’ll talk about your lifestyle – do you have kids, do you have dogs – and we’ll look at your budget, and then we’ll help you make a decision that will function best for you and meet your needs.”
Carpet comeback
After years of shying away from carpet, homeowners now are realizing they might prefer it.
“If you think carpet is outdated or wears poorly, you need to learn about the incredible new technology now available,” Niggeling said.

“Today’s fibers are made in a way that’s not only more affordable but wears a lot better. If you bought carpet five or 10 years ago, you’ll find the technology is now a lot stronger and more durable.”
People now are putting carpet in homes much more often, she added.
“You don’t have to replace it every few years, and it’s much easier to clean, even with pets,” she said.
“Even really light carpet is becoming more of an option. It brightens up a home and many of the carpets now are very hard to stain, even with muddy paws or footprints. So carpet has become something that consumers should consider.”
Luxury vinyl plank options
Sioux Falls loves its pets – but your flooring doesn’t always agree.
That’s where scratch-proof luxury vinyl plank can be an ideal addition.

“It’s really great for pets,” Niggeling said. “It holds up very well and has a lot of affordable options.”
Love the look of wood? You don’t have to give it up.
“With engineered wood, you can get a finish that’s going to hold up and be more scratch-resistant than ever,” she said.

Warm it up
Ceramic tile can be another highly durable option in flooring.
“We do a lot of it in bathrooms, but sometimes we’re installing it throughout the whole home because it’s such a resilient flooring,” Niggeling said. “Essentially, you cannot scratch or break it.”

Plus, there are tons of options, from marble-looking tile to wood-looking varieties and unique colors.

This time of year also is the perfect time to warm up your new flooring – literally.
“With our cold winters, heated floors can be a fabulous option,” Niggeling said.

“We install heated floor in new homes, and we can do it in a remodel if you want to add a heated floor in any home. It radiates through the floor, so you feel the warmth, and it even rises into the air, so it helps with the temperature control of your whole home.”
Whole Home effect
New flooring easily gives your home a face-lift, Niggeling said.
“It can give your bedroom or bathroom or even kitchen a new look while you keep things like existing cabinetry and woodwork,” she said.
“We’ve had someone show us cabinetry from the 1990s, and we can still help pick a new flooring that will complement it.”
Sometimes, what starts on a home’s floor leads up to a greater renovation or even new build. The Montgomery’s team is ready to help with that too.

“We want you to have the best experience because we know a lot of our customers are with us for life, from their first home to the second and their kids’ homes,” Niggeling said.
“You might come in a month or two later and buy a couch after we’ve helped with your floors, or you might decide to do your bathroom. We can provide everything from lighting to window treatments and counters in addition to the furniture. It’s complete interior design with free consulting and our help with project management from start to finish.”
The team also will work within your budget, she added.
“If you’re looking to stay within a certain price point, we will stay within it without giving up design,” Niggeling said.
“People have a preconceived notion that Montgomery’s is expensive, and we’re as competitive as anyone in town. But we make sure we help make selections for your home so you’ll love the look without breaking the bank.”
