Oct. 10: Fundraiser for kids

Sioux Empire Realtors for Kids will host the Reaching for the Stars fundraising gala beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday at 5 Oaks Venue. Enjoy a dinner by Chef Jeni, entertainment, desserts and drinks, and silent and live auctions to raise money to benefit children. The doors open at 5 p.m., with the live auction beginning about 7:30 p.m. Purchase your tickets here.

Oct. 10: Hurricane help

The podcast “The Scene” will host fundraisers for those affected by Hurricane Helene from 7 to 10 p.m. Thursdays, including this week, at The Den, 909 N. West Ave. It is establishing long-term relationships with communities affected by the hurricane. Donations of less than $500 can be sent to Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee. Donations of supplies such as rakes, large lawn trash bags, coolers and scrub brushes can be brought to the fundraisers.

Oct. 10-15: Halloween events

You don’t have to wait until Oct. 31 to spook yourself out for Halloween. Here are some early events you might want to take part in:

  • Good Night Theatre Collective will present “Night of the Living Dead: A Live Radio Play” at 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday in the Washington Pavilion’s Schulte Room. The play is based on the 1960s cult-classic horror film. It contains some adult language and themes, and is intended for mature audiences. You can get your tickets here.

  • Halloween at Lake Lorraine returns Saturday. You can trick-or-treat with characters and mascots, visit candy stations and receive other goodies from Lake Lorraine businesses and community businesses/organizations and take advantage of fall-themed photo opportunities. The free family-friendly event runs from 1 to 3 p.m. on the Lake Walk on Lake Lorraine’s west side. Park in the Carsforsale.com parking lot at 2500 S. Westlake Drive.

  • Roxi & Co., 501 E. 41st St., will host Hiss & Howls, a day filled with fun for the whole family, from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday. Dress your kids, your pets and yourself in costumes, and take part in nose-print pumpkins, a costume parade, peg games and candy, along with other events. Bring old blankets for a drive and change to support the rescues Sioux Empire Pit Rescue, Rescue Network, Sioux Empire TNR, 605 Boxer Rescue and The Kitten League.

  • The Jaycees Feargrounds Kids Day will be 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday in the Fine Arts Building at the W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds. You can experience the Jaycees’ haunted attraction with the lights on, collect candy in a decorated maze and enjoy fun activities outside too. It’s designed for children age 12 and younger. Tickets can be purchased at the gate for $10 each with one free adult per paid child. There are discounts for canned food donations for the Food Pantry and Sioux Falls Area Humane Society.

  • A TEEN-Night Halloween Party will begin at 8 p.m. Sunday at McNally’s Irish Pub, 6211 S. Old Village Place. It’s a dance party for high school students with DJ DaVonte until 10:30 p.m. Costumes are optional. Cost is $5 at the door. There will be drink specials, Halloween punch and pizza specials.

  • Learn how to create a spooky scene with step-by-step instructions using acrylic paint at the Museum of Visual Materials, 500 N. Main Ave., at 1 p.m. Tuesday. It’s designed for kids age 6 and older. Cost is $5; register here.

Oct. 12: Fall festival

Proceeds from a Fall Harvest Festival at St. John American Lutheran Church, 1912 W. 13th St., will be donated to Hayward and Garfield elementary schools to help pay down students’ lunch debts. The event is 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. A homemade soup lunch with fresh bread and pie is available for a freewill donation – $5 suggested – or a donation of canned food items. There also will be a bake sale and silent auction.

Oct. 15: STEAM Day

Tuesday is a day off from school for many students, but the Washington Pavilion is making sure the learning doesn’t have to stop. It’s No School STEAM Day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for grades four and five. Science, technology, engineering, art and math activities will include exploring the Kirby Science Discovery Center and a special focus on science, specifically aeronautics and hands-on activities related to flight and aeronautics, including drones, rockets and airplanes.
