May 10: Art show

Sioux Falls advertising agency Fresh Product will host “Big Fun Time,” an art show commemorating the agency’s 20th year in business, with a reception Friday that is free and open to the public.

It will run from 6 to 8 p.m. at Ipso Gallery, an art space supported by the agency at 400 N. Main Ave. “Big Fun Time” elevates childhood days of handwritten invites, big to-dos and “the delightful weight of celebration” with original work from more than 25 regional artists. After the opening reception, the exhibit will remain open until July 26 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, excluding holidays.

May 10-11: Halfway to Halloween

Terror 29 in Brandon is opening for two nights for its Halfway to Halloween scare. The sneak peak of the haunted house’s upcoming season will be from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday at 1420 E. Cedar St. Tickets for the 15-minute walkthrough are $18. Terror 29 also will unveil its renovated  Mystery Shop of Horrors & Curiosities with a ribbon-cutting at 12:30 p.m. Friday. From noon to 1:30 p.m., all merchandise will be 13 percent off, and haunt tickets will be $3 off. There will be pizza and desserts to celebrate. The shop will be open from noon to 10 p.m. both days.

May 11: Rhinopalooza

Rhinoceruses have thick skins, but even so, you don’t want to hurt their feelings by skipping Rhinopalooza at the Great Plains Zoo on Saturday. From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. you can celebrate all things rhino, including a keeper chat, face painting, rhino enrichment, watermelon feeding for rhinos and people, Rhino Ranger letters, an education table and a plush giveaway. Is is presented by the Argus Leader/Local IQ.

May 11: Cinco de Mayo

The Cinco De Mayo Fiesta, presented by Wells Fargo, will be from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at Falls Park featuring authentic Latino food, music, art, children’s activities and more. Admission and all activities in the Kids’ Zone are free. That includes: pinatas, inflatables, balloon twisting and a clown, and Simply Ever After Entertainment characters. The Chihuahua fashion show returns this year at 12:45 p.m. The Cinco de Mayo Fiesta is a family event that brings together the business and civic community of Sioux Falls and the surrounding area to welcome, appreciate and celebrate the Latino cultures in the Sioux Falls area. The fiesta benefits Caminando Juntos, a ministry of the Presentation Sisters for the Latino population in the area. Services provided include assistance in accessing health care, education, legal and social service systems; education through English classes and Workplace English classes; and provision of Immigration Legal Services.

May 11: Mother’s Day party

This year, The Empire Mall is pulling out all the stops to honor moms with its Mother’s Day Moments event, which features activities, treats, giveaways and a holiday craft. It will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at The Empire Mall in the Center Court near Altar’d State and Maurices.

May 11: Fur ball

The Cattitude Cafe will presen The Great Catsby Fur Ball, a 1920s cat-themed party speak-easy style, from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday. It will include champagne, snacks, music and more. The event is for those 21 and older. You’ll also get a chance to cuddle the kitties. You can purchase tickets here.

May 12: 2024 concert series

Music returns to Good Earth State Park at Blood Run with folk-rock group Back Alley Band performing from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday in the park amphitheater. Southern Perfection BBQ will be the food truck. Seating is limited, but you can bring your own chair or blanket. In case of rain, concerts will be moved inside a visitor center. A park license is required. Commonground will perform May 19, and The Hegg Brothers on May 26.

Coming up: May 16

Interested in learning more about the passenger trains that once stopped in Sioux Falls? Siouxland Heritage Museums, Startup Sioux Falls and Local Lou will host a history talk on Passenger Trains in the Siouxland Area, Yesterday and Tomorrow on May 16. The first round of the Sioux Falls Railroad History Historical Marker bus tour with Local Lou begins  at 6 p.m. Don’t worry — you can do the bus tour and hear the history talk with Dan Bilka inside the MarketBeat Theater at Startup Sioux Falls.
