April 13: Film showing

A feature documentary with a South Dakota connection will be shown at 7 p.m. Thursday at the State Theatre. A question-and-answer conversation on “Big Chief, Black Hawk” will follow the film. In the audience will be writer/director Jonathan Isaac Jackson from New Orleans and producer Paul Fishback, a Brookings native. “Big Chief, Black Hawk” looks into the life of the youngest Mardi Gras Indian Big Chief and his “tribe” as they navigate social and environmental issues. The film premiered on television on PBS’ World Channel in February. Purchase tickets here.

April 14: Polar Plunge

Feel like taking a chilly dip? South Dakota Special Olympics invites you to raise money and awareness by taking part in the annual Sioux Falls Polar Plunge on Friday at J&L Harley-Davidson. This year’s theme is “Back to the ’80s.” so break out your best ’80s outfit. On-site registration will take place at 2601 W. 60th St. N. beginning at 5 p.m., with the plunge at 7:30 p.m.

April 14: Lucky artwork

It’s Lucky Number night at Ipso Gallery at Fresh Produce, 400 N. Main Ave. From 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, sponsors will participate in three rounds of lottery-style drawings to determine who gets their prized pick from a selection of 21 original works. Sponsorship dollars will benefit the participating artists and help fund a permanent art installation at Jacobson Plaza at Falls Park. Gallery viewing is at 5:30 p.m. with the lottery drawing at 6:30 p.m.

April 15: DIY playdough

Slime is so last year. Learn how to make your own playdough at a workshop from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Juniper Apothecary on the boardwalk of 8th & Railroad Center, 401 E. Eighth St. This is a come-and-go event. Cost is $10, and you’ll take home about a pound of playdough.

April 15: Outdoor sale

Update: This has been postponed to April 22 because of low temperatures and rain in the forecast. Find second-hand treasures at Gift & Thrift’s first outdoor sale of the season in its parking lot at 10th Street and Bahnson Avenue. Vendors will offer vintage, retro, handmade, antique and modern deco items. Hours will be 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

April 16: Public safety showcase

A public safety showcase for Sioux Falls Fire Rescue and Sioux Falls Police Department will include kids’ activities, displays of specialized vehicles and equipment, and light refreshments. It’s a good way to learn about a possible career in public safety. The event runs from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Sioux Falls Convention Center.

April 18: Tamale Tuesday

Salas Salsas continues its monthly offering of Mexican foods that begin with the letter T on Tuesday at Full Circle Book Co-op. Tamales will be served from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Loteria, or Mexican bingo, also will be played, with prizes including drink tokens, tamales and salsas. For future planning, the menu includes tacos May 16, tostadas June 20, tortas July 18, taquitos Aug. 15, tlacoyos Sept. 19 and tlayudas Oct. 17.

Coming up: April 27-28

Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation is coordinating volunteer tree-planting days on two upcoming weekends. Its goal is to plant 500 trees in select parks April 27-28 and May 5-6. Registration is required.
