Sioux Empire United Way’s Coins for Kids receives rare gold coin
The Sioux Empire United Way’s Coins for Kids fundraiser just received an especially memorable gift.
A $50 American Buffalo Gold Coin, valued at approximately $3,000, was contributed by an anonymous donor.
The contribution will directly benefit the fundraising program dedicated to supporting Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, which provides free books to children from birth to age 5.

The Coins for Kids fundraiser started in 1997 and takes place annually throughout elementary schools in the Sioux Falls School District and surrounding communities, including Tea and Harrisburg.
The unique initiative encourages students to collect spare change while learning about philanthropy and the importance of supporting their community and those in need.
“We are deeply moved by this generous and unique donation,” said Kim Burma, 2025 campaign chair for Sioux Empire United Way. “Every dollar raised helps bring the joy of books into homes across the region. This gift will undoubtedly make a lasting impact on the lives of countless children.”
Last year, the Coins for Kids program raised just over $29,000, which equates to 13,419 books. The donation of the $50 American Buffalo Gold Coin is a testament to the creative ways residents are stepping up to support their community, according to the United Way.
“Coins for Kids teaches our students that anyone, regardless of age, can positively impact their community,” said Superintendent Jane Stavem of the Sioux Falls School District. “Change creates ‘change,’ and the Coins for Kids program is a shining example of the collective good we can achieve through Sioux Empire United Way.”
Each year, The First National Bank in Sioux Falls plays “a critical role in the Coins for Kids campaign by sorting and counting thousands of coins collected by the schools,” according to Sioux Empire United Way. “Their continued support ensures the success of the program and maximizes its impact.”

Sioux Empire United Way’s Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program delivers an age-appropriate book to registered children each month at no cost to their families.
“The program has proven to be a cornerstone in early childhood development and education, laying the foundation for academic success,” according to Sioux Empire United Way.
