My 605: Liz Meyer

What’s home unless you make it your own? My 605 takes you inside the lives, loves and little secrets of those who call South Dakota – area code 605 – home.

This week’s edition features Liz Meyer, designer at Schemmer and owner of pigeon Gertie.

My home in the 605 is: Pettigrew Heights.

The biggest reason I live in the 605 is: It is big enough to offer great amenities and culture but small enough that I can get involved in shaping the community I call home. Since I moved to Sioux Falls in 2015, I have developed my creative side, watercoloring and illustrating on the computer. I even discovered a passion for writing and illustrating children’s books. I am inspired daily by the people and places in Sioux Falls and can’t imagine living anywhere else.

After home, I spend the most time here: Target. It has everything I need and some things I don’t. I enjoy shopping in my free time.

When I need to get away, you’ll find me: Walking along the SculptureWalk downtown or Falls Park.

The best meal I ever ate in the 605 was at: PAve. The Caprese burger and fries was my go-to comfort food until it was removed from the menu.

My go-to coffee shop is: Josiah’s. I order the peanut butter banana frappe every time, and the homemade pop tarts are perfection. The atmosphere is bustling, and I love the rustic ambience.

My favorite place to grab an adult beverage in the 605 is: The Treasury at Hotel on Phillips. I haven’t found a craft cocktail there that I didn’t like. The art deco style is right up my alley!

When I need to experience the great outdoors, you’ll find me: At Lake Alvin fishing or shooting my bow. It’s great to have serene lakes nearby to enjoy and unwind.

The spot I’d recommend for a date is: Mackenzie River is where I met my boyfriend for our first date. I have to say it went pretty well aside from the fact that he was a few sips away from leaving because I was running late. Another idea would be hiking at Good Earth State Park.

The best pizza in the 605 is: Actually a flatbread at Mackenzie River. The Rangoon flatbread keeps me coming back regularly.

When my friends and I get together, you’ll probably find us: At Ode to Food for dinner and cocktails or grabbing brunch at Blarney Stone. Patios are always a plus.

When I want to meet new people in the 605 I go: When I first moved to Sioux Falls, before I had even found an apartment, I became a member of YPN and attended events to meet like-minded professionals. I was fortunate to meet one of my closest friends who introduced me to many more great people. I recently graduated from Think 3D’s Leaders of Tomorrow program where I met many new faces that I have stayed in contact with. I also attend a women’s networking group that provides encouragement and support in my professional and individual growth.

My best memory in the 605 is: My first trip to Sioux Falls: My mom and I drove up for a show choir competition in Mitchell, and I scheduled a job interview for the Friday before. I was lucky to have someone else drive because I pulled an all-nighter putting my portfolio together. We were impressed by Sioux Falls and all the opportunities it had to offer. Fortunately, I got the job and have called Sioux Falls home ever since.

The one thing I’m least crazy about in the 605 is: I wish there was an Ikea, Trader Joe’s or Container Store — although, my budget might be in trouble if any of those stores were nearby.

And finally, life in pictures. Here are the top three photos that most sum up My 605:
