A new chapter at Arrowhead Park begins as the house perched above the water becomes a gathering space available to the community.

“The Arrowhead House is a phenomenal addition to our park system, particularly on the east side,” said Mike Patten, park development manager for the city of Sioux Falls.

“After years of planning, the Arrowhead House received some much-deserved attention. It will create a needed, welcoming gathering space and support programming within the park.”

The project involved a two-phased renovation, including upgrades to the building’s parking lot, HVAC, flooring and walls; and adding restrooms, a full kitchen, sitting room, large multipurpose space and adjacent classroom.

The indoor space can accommodate up to 93 people – approximately 60 in the great room and 30 in the classroom depending on the need.

A 3,000-square-foot outdoor area includes a multilevel deck offering expansive views of the quarry pond and can accommodate up to 178 people.

On-site parking is available and includes 14 hard-surface spaces around the circular driveway, along with an overflow grass area.

The 2,440-square-foot former private residence, along with the 130-acre property known as Arrowhead Park, was donated by Dorothy and Dale Weir in the late 1990s.

Nature education was one of their core values.

In addition to being available for public rental, the Arrowhead House also serves as a space to support programming, classes and various activities at Arrowhead Park, which is at 1600 River Bluff Road, near 26th Street and Arrowhead Parkway.

“We intend to use the Arrowhead House beyond its capabilities as a rental facility,” said Jackie Nelson, the city’s recreation manager. “Whether it’s hosting a class, supporting park programming or providing a welcoming space for gatherings, it plays a vital role in enhancing the experience at Arrowhead Park.”

Events this winter, through expanded programming, will include nature education, outdoor exploration, sunrise yoga, bird watching and more indoor/outdoor options for the whole family.

Arrowhead Park is just across Highway 42/Arrowhead Parkway from the Mary Jo Wegner Arboretum.

“From a planning and development standpoint, these are two lesser-known facilities, but they’re fantastic, especially in the fall. It’s a terrific experience, and to finally renovate the Arrowhead House itself is the final capstone for the park,” Patten added.

“Having this be a piece of the park now and available to the community ties it all together.”

Upgrades coming soon to this area will provide better access between Arrowhead Park and the arboretum.

“As a part of the city and state joint project along Highway 42, there will be a pedestrian connection tunnel to link the two parks together so visitors will have a seamless transition from the Mary Jo Wegner Arboretum to Arrowhead Park,” Patten said.

Private event bookings at Arrowhead House will cost $290 per hour with a two-hour minimum and a 20 percent midweek discount during regular business hours on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
