Mom jeans or skinny? Local Instagram influencers offer look at trends for spring
Maybe you’re finally venturing out more.
Maybe all the time at home with little care for what you wore made you realize it’s time for a closet refresh.
Or maybe you’re just trying to get caught up on the ongoing “skinny jeans” or “mom jeans” debate.
They’ve got you covered.
This weekend, five of the Sioux Falls area’s most popular social media influencers will be cleaning out their closets so you can shop them.

The Sioux Empire Blogger Closet Sale will feature new or like-new merchandise from ladies who know how to keep you in style:
- Britanni Boyd, @britannileigh
- Marilyn Dikun, @marilynjoan
- Amanda Millan, @lifewithamanda.ann
- Kayla Waldner, @kaylamarwaldner
- Erica Wilcox, @bestdressedblonde
It’s also coming to a new venue, Laurel Ridge Barn, “which is a beautiful space,” said Kayla Waldner, one of the participating bloggers.
“We’ll have a DJ, and it will allow us to work with more vendors. This is allowing us to grow, and we want this to be more like an event rather than a bunch of girls coming to shop who leave right after.”
So by way of a preview, we’re helping you up your fashion game for spring by asking for their expert advice.
OK, let’s start with the great debate. For those who missed this, everyone from major fashion retailers to Gen Zers on Tik Tok is proclaiming the era of the skinny jean is over. In its place: an array of looser-fitting denim options. Think straight-legged, high-waisted, even boot cut.
So how do the influencers weigh in?
Amanda: Personally, this is going to be hard. A lot of people get really upset about this. The skinny jean versus the mom straight leg. I am really into high waists.

I’ve always been a big fan, even in the skinny, but I am really into the mom jean or the straight-leg jean. I think whatever fits your body type you should do. I try to keep up with the trends and keep a nice balance. So I do like the mom-jean fit. But it’s a hard subject because some people are absolutely one way or the other.
Britanni: OK, so I am totally on board with the straight-leg, high-waisted jean. I love the fit. I don’t really wear a skinny jean so much anymore. I still have some in my closet, but I love the fit of a cropped straight jean.
Erica: I’m seeing a lot of straight-leg and mom jeans, which I think just the words “mom jeans” people instantly have it turned out of their head, but there are a lot of flattering styles.

I will forever be wearing skinny jeans. I don’t know. Right now, I feel like with denim, anything goes. High-rise, even flare are back in, but definitely straight-leg and mom jeans are in right now.
Kayla: I love the mom-jean look. That’s been my go-to. I found a lot of styles I can work with through the mom-jean trend with the high-waisted and ripped-up jean look. That always brings a little more room in the thigh area, which always helps.

Marilyn: Oh, man. I wasn’t sure what to feel about it. I do love my skinny jeans, but I have been eyeballing a couple pairs of ’90s wide-legged straight jeans, and I’m going to give it a shot because I do like to keep up with the trends. Something tells me the more I wear them the more I will incorporate them into my wardrobe.
What else is trending this spring?
Amanda: I feel like crop tops are really in. It’s probably not as much in the Midwest but more on the East and West coasts. It doesn’t have to be short crop, but that waist hit, more boxy fit.

I’m also a huge bodysuit lover, and I think that’s kind of an ongoing trend. You can wear it casual or business, and you don’t have to worry about things coming untucked, and it looks clean and put together.
Britanni:Right now, I’m loving florals, a pastel floral-type thing. That I think is super trendy. Any type of pretty little floral.

I like to add a little bit of something to an outfit that gives it that something unique, but I am typically more of a neutral person. So white on white. And in the winter, I was like black on black. So I’ll do an all-white look or a lace bodysuit-type thing, with like a cute little blazer.
Erica: I’m seeing a lot of smocked detailing, smocking in tops and dresses, which is my favorite style because it accentuates the smallest part of your waist.

A statement collar, a statement lapel, still statement shoulders but a lot more accentuated parts of the top. There’s still the cute loungewear sets, the tie-dye jogger sets, but I got an email that the No. 1 search … was wedding-guest dresses, and for us, seeing that is a really good sign. People will be dressing up again and looking for those pieces.
Kayla: I would say it’s the reverse stitch on a lot of tops. One of those trends I can’t get behind is the muscle tee. I just don’t’ like that.
Marilyn: I’ve been really into neutrals. They’re just classic and timeless, and I like to throw in floral tops or light-patterned floral dresses for spring.

What about accessories?
Amanda: For summer, I feel like the bucket hats are coming back. I know. It’s coming back. I do own one. It’s tan, neutral, but you are seeing that little bucket hat come in. I’ve seen big fashion bloggers doing the ’70s vibe with the high-waist crop and bucket hat. I don’t know how much of that will hit our area.
Britanni: I love a strappy nude sandal. I love a good hat. Jewelry, gold jewelry, and the bag for sure.

Erica: Sandals are obviously huge, and there are a ton of trends with those. I’m still studs and appliques be big for sandals.
Kayla: The hair clips that were like claws, those are back in, so that’s a fun trend. I don’t do a lot with my hair, so a lot of my looks are clips or ponytails.
Marilyn: I have been noticing a lot of braided or weaved-type sandals, or strappy-type sandals, embellished sandals.

And finally, can you give us a preview of what you plan to bring to the blogger sale?
Amanda: I’m going to have some summer dresses and rompers, jean shorts, denim in general, shoes – sneakers, heels – and some swimming suit items and coverups. A few sweaters but not a ton of winter.
Britanni:I’ve got anything from all seasons. We bring everything: shorts, jeans, sweaters, tank tops, dresses, jackets, swimsuits, jewelry, sunglasses, bags, lot of shoes. I’m bringing some home decor.
Erica: This year for me something that’s a little different is I have a lot of new beauty makeup. I had a one-year contract with Ulta and had a ton of product come. All their vendors were sending things, so if it’s not my color or something I would use or hair tools I already have, I’ll have it there. And we moved, so I have a lot of home decor, and it will be more summery seasonal clothes versus heavy coats and a ton of sweaters.

Kayla: I have a mix of spring, a lot of sweaters, some lighter jackets, overalls, a lot of flannels, cute boutique tops, jean jackets, a lot of jackets that are perfect for summer and spring. And I have some beauty products and jewelry.
Marilyn: The girls always make fun of me because I bring the most stuff. Literally everything. Jeans, tops, swimwear, shoes, you name it, I will have it there. And I’m bringing baby items as well because they grow out of clothes so fast. So I’ll be adding cute baby items, and a lot of mine is neutral so it will work for girls too.
