Public transit plan calls for expanded on-demand service, fewer fixed routes

Big changes could be coming to the Sioux Falls public transit network — but first, you have a chance to weigh in.

Sioux Area Metro and its transit-tech provider are taking public input “as they consider transformational improvements to Sioux Falls’ public transit network,” the organizations said in a statement.

Via already has increased on-demand access to transit services in southeast Sioux Falls, as well as on Saturdays since becoming the city’s transit operator early this year.

The next proposed changes include:

• Expanded availability and frequency of public transit for more residents in Sioux Falls — for example, some bus lines running every 30 minutes all day and more weekend service.
•  Improvements to bus routes with more direct trips, easier transfers and shorter wait times.
• Expanded Via SAM On Demand service to the entire city, with a focus on areas that are not within walking distance from bus stops.

While no one is projected to lose access to service — they just might use a different type of vehicle — the plan includes reducing the number of fixed bus routes from 12 to nine. Changes are expected to take effect in August.

Here’s how to get involved in the “SAM Reimagined” plan:

• In person: Stop by a drop-in session anytime between 2:30 and 8 p.m. May 6 in rooms A and B of the Downtown Library, 200 N. Dakota Ave., to learn about the proposed changes, ask questions and provide feedback. Refreshments will be provided.
