Tickets going fast as 8 Broadway shows prepare to play in Sioux Falls
This paid piece is sponsored by Washington Pavilion Management Inc.
From Broadway favorites to new hit shows, family-friendly musicals to returning favorites, the upcoming Pavilion Performance Season has something for every audience.
Now is the time to start looking forward to the performances coming to town and make sure you’ve reserved your seats of choice.
“Do not wait until the week or even the month of the shows!” said Regina Ruhberg, director of performances at the Washington Pavilion.

“We added a fourth performance to each title based on the success of past sales, and some shows have even more than that. We know there is a demand for Broadway, and we are excited to offer this opportunity.”
Even in the first few days of ticket sales, the demand is clear.
“I can tell you almost every performance is over half-sold already,” Ruhberg said. “I would encourage everyone to secure their seats as soon as possible. That way you are guaranteed the best seat at the lowest price.”
Here’s a closer look at the shows you won’t want to miss!
SHREK – THE MUSICAL
Your favorite ogre is back in the hilarious stage spectacle based on the Oscar-winning, smash-hit DreamWorks animated film.

The Washington Pavilion leads off the Performance Series with this family favorite Oct. 24-26.
“It will be a great show for the young and the young at heart!” Ruhberg said. “It’s based on the animated film with a few adaptations for the stage and will certainly be a good family-night outing.”
COME FROM AWAY
This Broadway hit returns to Sioux Falls Jan. 7-9 after a weeklong run two years ago. You’ll be moved by the remarkable true story of 7,000 stranded passengers and the small town in Newfoundland that welcomed them.
“The show was a big hit when it was here previously, and that was one of the driving factors to bring it back again so soon,” Ruhberg said.

“For anyone who missed the show last time, you must make plans to see it in January. It is so good. It’s only 90 minutes long, and you will laugh, cry and feel a new sense of community when you leave the theater. I’ve seen it twice in New York City and twice when it was in Sioux Falls and can’t wait to see it again. It is that good.”
HADESTOWN
This haunting and hopeful theatrical experience arrives with five performances Jan. 17-19.
“I was a little hesitant to see HADESTOWN as I do not know a lot about Greek mythology, but I was pleasantly surprised!” Ruhberg said.

“As with most musicals, the first scene sets up the storyline and who the characters are. So if you pay attention at the beginning, the entire show is easy to follow. The sets and costumes are stunning. I would put HADESTOWN in the same bucket with COME FROM AWAY — you must see it!”
TINA – THE TINA TURNER MUSICAL
The triumphant story of the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll set to the pulse-pounding soundtrack of her most beloved hits arrives Feb. 21-23.
“TINA is a fantastic story that will take you back to the great music of the 1980s, while telling the story of her struggles and triumphs to become the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” Ruhberg said.

“For this show as well as HADESTOWN, I would urge folks to experience something new; they won’t regret it.”
CHICAGO
A universal tale of fame, fortune and all that jazz, with one showstopping song after another and the most astonishing dancing you’ve ever seen, CHICAGO comes back to the Washington Pavilion March 27-29.
“CHICAGO is the perfect show for anyone who hasn’t experienced a Broadway performance. It is truly a classic that all other shows stem from,” Ruhberg said.

“It’s the quintessential love story about fame and fortune, with outstanding costumes and dance numbers. Bring a friend and introduce them to theater, or see this beloved show one more time!”
THE BOOK OF MORMON
Get ready to laugh once again as THE BOOK OF MORMON returns to the Washington Pavilion May 2-3.
This outrageous musical comedy follows the adventures of a mismatched pair of missionaries, sent halfway across the world to spread the Good Word.

It’s a Sioux Falls favorite as crowds “have embraced this show every time it has been here,” Ruhberg said. “I think it is one of those shows you can see over and over again and still find a joke you missed. It’s a good show to see for hours of laughter.”
SIX
The SIX wives of Henry VIII take the microphone to remix 500 years of historical heartbreak into a euphoric celebration of 21st century girl power. It’s coming to the Washington Pavilion for seven performances May 28-June 1.
“This one is completely different from any other Broadway production. It’s actually more of a pop concert,” Ruhberg said.

“There is no spoken word as the story is told through song. It’s fast-paced and energetic.”
While there’s no need to be a history buff, a little online search to refresh your memory about the six wives might be helpful, she added.

“Either way, women especially will love this show,” Ruhberg said.
“Being able to present this show so early in its tour schedule is another testament to the support our community has for Broadway. Getting seven shows of SIX and five shows of HADESTOWN is a huge feather in our cap.”
THE ADDAMS FAMILY
The spooky season arrives a bit early as the Performance Season wraps up with THE ADDAMS FAMILY June 20-22.
It’s a delightfully devilish musical comedy featuring America’s darkest family.

“With it being in June, we thought it would be a good show for families as school is out and vacations are starting,” Ruhberg said. “It’s a fun way to start the summer and for those driving through town to stop, plus it’s an easy show to enjoy that provides a lot of levity.”
More to enjoy
Watch for at least one, if not two, opportunities to attend a cast talk back with each production.
“I love hosting these informal Q&A conversations, especially when there is an inspiring young actor/actress in the audience,” Ruhberg said. “Anything we can do to motivate people to the arts is a win for us.”
She’s also hoping “to have more backstage opportunities for our donors and subscribers,” she added. “With the cast and crew being in town longer, it should provide a chance for more outreach.”
The Washington Pavilion lobby bars will be offering specialty-themed drinks, and food will be available in The WP cafe before each show.

“Each show has a story all its own and will provide opportunities for countless conversations with family and friends for days and months afterwards,” Ruhberg said.
“Come early and enjoy the Visual Arts Center, stay late to participate in the curtain talks, experience something new, and maybe make new friends along the way!”
