April 10: Artists reception

Visit with the artists featured in the “Heartland Horizons” exhibit in the Washington Pavilion Visual Arts Center from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. This exhibition in the Bates Trimble Gallery seeks to capture the essence of the Heartland — its landscapes, people, history and future. Thirty artists were selected to help tell these stories: Roberta Barnes, Susan Bell, Michael Brown, Keith Buswell, Sarah Peak Convery, Judy DeBoer, Rodger Ellingson, Alexa Ensz, Rachel Funk, Carol Geu, Megan Hammer, Pat Hansen, Susan Haygood, Russell Horton, Janice Johnson, Jeanette Johnson, Karen Kinder, Epiphany Knedler, Greg Latza, Curt Lund, Christine May, Sarah Mulder, Phyllis Packard, Aaron Packard, Audrey Powles, Gary Steinley, Susan Thelen, Judy Thompson, E Wieser and Jean Zaldivar. The exhibit is open through May 27.

April 10-12: Books, books, books

The Augustana Library Associates will host the 2025 Books & More Sale on Thursday, Friday and Saturday in the Center for Western Studies at the university’s Fantle Building, 2121 S. Summit Ave. Paperbacks and CDs will sell for 25 cents while hardback books, puzzles, games and DVDs are only a dollar. Hours are noon to 5 p.m. Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.

April 11: Free shaved ice

Ready for a taste of summer? Dakota Snow/Polar Bites is celebrating its opening for the year with free kiddie-sized shaved ice from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at 501 E. 41st St.

April 12: Easter egg hunt

East Side Lutheran Church will host an Egg-stravaganza from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at 1300 E. 10th St. It will include a brunch, kids crafts, the story of Easter and an Easter egg hunt. The event is free.

April 12: Easter egg hunt

The weather will determine whether the egg hunt at Dow Rummel Village is held indoors or outside, but regardless, it will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at 1321 W. Dow Rummel St. The plan is to serve a light continental breakfast with games for participants and families at Covell Terrace.

Coming up: April 18

Plan ahead for the Earth Day Festival on April 18 at Great Bear Recreation Park. From 6 to 7:30 p.m., families can connect with nature and learn about being stewards of Earth’s resources. Activities include a self-guided scavenger hunt along the trails and a tote bag decorating station. You’ll also receive a grow kit to start a garden at home.
