Sioux Falls Tool Library aims to build on DIY-centered mission

As the concept goes, having access to basic tools becomes a gateway to improving properties and learning skills.

In its early days of community building, the Sioux Falls Tool Library is finding a solid response to the idea.

“This is a community-backed initiative, and there are many hands that are making it happen,” co-organizer Jordan Deffenbaugh said.

“Our goal is to help strengthen the community by allowing members the ability to complete projects without the need for expensive tools that ultimately they may not need on an ongoing basis.”

Based at 921 E. Eighth St., the tool library is staffed by volunteers and offers members access to a wide variety of tools, beginning at $50 a year.

At the recent Sioux Empire Home Show, the Sioux Falls Tool Library’s booth drew people “incredibly enthusiastic about the concept,” Deffenbaugh said. “The best thing that came from it is other vendors becoming aware of the program. We want to develop partnerships with local businesses in the realm of the trades and development.”

The Tool Library has nearly 100 members but needs 500 to be sustainable, he estimates.

“But new people are coming by every weekend, and we’ve gotten a fresh batch of volunteers engaged,” he said. “Volunteers are the greatest resource we could come across. We need help staffing the library as well as teaching classes and picking up donations.”

The Tool Library already is exploring other neighborhoods that could benefit from the concept, Deffenbaugh said. That includes themed libraries for gardening or auto repair. The group also is starting a community workshop in the basement of the Union Gospel Mission.

“This will become an upskilling space for the purpose of connecting people with training opportunities through the development of community projects,” he said. “Honestly, just reach out to us, and we can let you know how we can build community.”
