Sioux Falls cancels Independence Day celebration

The city of Sioux Falls is cancelling its 2024 Independence Day Celebration festivities, citing the chance of morning thunderstorms, scattered showers and cool temperatures.

That includes the 5K fun run/walk, parade, picnic and afternoon entertainment.

“Safety of every resident is our top priority,” said Jackie Nelson, recreation manager for Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation in a statement. “We understand the disappointment this may bring to the community and participants who enjoy the tradition of the Independence Day Celebration. We appreciate residents’ understanding and support and look forward to seeing everyone at future events.”

Those who registered for the 5K walk/run can pick up their T-shirts at the Midco Aquatic Center during normal business hours through July 12.

It’s the second consecutive year rain has put a damper on the festivities, as the parade was cancelled last year too.

At this point, fireworks are still planned at the W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds. If there is rain, the plan is to reschedule them for July 5. Gates open at 7 p.m. with food trucks and family entertainment. The fireworks show is at 10 p.m. Click here for details on that event.
