Road Report: March 25, 2024
Construction season is here, so we’re back with our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.
What’s underway
Sixth Street: Work on the Sixth Street bridge downtown has continued through the winter.

The bridge is expected to reopen to traffic in the next few weeks to provide access to Cherapa Place and LSS via Phillips Avenue so reconstruction work can continue on Sixth Street between the bridge and Weber Avenue.

All work is expected to be complete later this year.

Veterans Parkway: Work on the Veterans Parkway bridge over 85th Street also continued through the winter, and the bridge deck is expected to be poured in the next few weeks.

As part of this section of the Veterans Parkway project, Western Avenue between 95th Street and County Road 106, or 271st Street, closed March 18 to allow crews to construct the new intersection of Veterans and Western, as well as to reconstruct Western between 95th and County Road 106.

The intersection of 95th and Western will remain open for the rest of the school year but then will close for the summer for reconstruction as well. Western is expected to reopen to traffic in November.

Benson Road bridge: Benson Road between Minnesota and Fourth avenues closed Feb. 19 to allow crews to replace the deck on the bridge over the diversion channel.

Traffic should utilize 60th Street North as an alternate route. The bike trail under the bridge also is closed during construction – a bike trail detour has been provided around the closure.

Benson Road is expected to reopen to traffic in November, and all work on this project will be completed in the spring of 2025.
Benson & I-229: Work resumed on the Benson Road and Interstate 229 interchange March 11.

Traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction on the north side of Benson Road. This project will be complete in the summer of 2025.

Tallgrass Avenue: Tallgrass Avenue between 74th and 89th streets closed March 12 to allow crews to continue construction on this street. Underground utilities were completed in 2023, and the grading and paving work will be worked on this year. Work is expected to be completed this fall. Traffic should utilize Louise Avenue as an alternate route.
41st & I-29: Work resumed on the 41st Street and Interstate 29 interchange March 18.

Traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction on the south side of 41st Street from Terry Avenue to the east side of the bridge.

Work is expected to be complete and the diverging diamond interchange operational this summer.
Minnesota Avenue: The center turn lane of Minnesota Avenue between 14th and 18th streets closed March 22 to allow crews to perform sewer lining work. This work is expected to be complete in a couple of days, weather permitting.
What’s next
12th & Sherman: Weather permitting, beginning today, the center portion of 12th Street will be closed at Sherman Avenue to allow crews to perform sewer lining work. No parking will be allowed in the work area. Traffic will be maintained on either side of the work area. This work is expected to be complete in a couple of days.
