Construction season is here, so we’re back with our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.

What’s underway

I-29 bridges: The South Dakota Department of Transportation continues work to rehabilitate several bridges on Interstate 29 between Madison and 26th streets.

The northbound on-ramp from 26th Street onto I-29 reopened to traffic last week, and work has switched to the west side of the interstate for the northbound lanes.

The overall project is expected to be complete in July.

Slurry seal: The city’s annual slurry seal project kicked off last week.

A slurry seal is a protective seal coat that extends the life of pavement. It’s a half-inch layer applied on top of the existing asphalt surface by a paver and is a mixture of asphalt oil, small rock and other additives.

Typically done on asphalt pavement in good condition, a slurry seal provides a new wearing course and preserves the underlying pavement, preventing the need for more expensive repairs in the future.

The slurry seal process is fast-moving, and after application, streets generally are reopened in less than one day.

The slurry seal work is expected to be complete in a few weeks, weather permitting. This work is focused on neighborhood streets for this road construction season.

Here’s a closer look:

What’s next

Traffic detection loops: Beginning today, work will begin to make repairs to the traffic detection loops at the following locations:

    • 18th Street and Marion Road.
    • 49th Street and Marion Road.
    • 34th Street and Louise Avenue.
    • 57th Street and Oxbow Avenue.
    • 22nd Street and Kiwanis Avenue.
    • 10th Street and Fairfax Avenue.

One lane of traffic will be closed while crews are performing this work, but traffic will be maintained at all times. Work will occur only at one location at a time and will take place outside of peak traffic times. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.

12th Street: Beginning today, the outside eastbound lane of 12th Street will be closed just west of Ellis Road to allow crews to bore a casing pipe under 12th Street. This work is expected to be complete in about two weeks.

Dubuque Avenue: Beginning today, Dubuque Avenue will be closed between Madison Street and Revere Drive to allow crews to install underground utilities. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.

57th Street: Beginning on Tuesday, the outside eastbound lane of 57th Street will be closed at Bur Oak Place to allow crews to perform utility work. This work is expected to be complete in one day.

Veterans Parkway: Beginning on Wednesday, the outside northbound lane closure currently in place on Veterans Parkway between Sixth and Madison streets will be extended north of Madison to allow crews to continue to install sanitary sewer force main pipe. The entire project is expected to be complete in November.

I-90 Exit 406: Beginning at 7 p.m. Wednesday, the eastbound and westbound lanes on Interstate 90 at Exit 406 for Brandon will be closed temporarily to allow crews to set bridge girders. During the closure, traffic will be diverted through the on- and off-ramps and back onto I-90. This traffic diversion is scheduled to be in place until 7 a.m. Thursday. Lane closures and traffic diversions at the exit also are planned from 7 p.m. Thursday through 7 a.m. Friday. The second night of the scheduled traffic diversion is to allow crews to install components to build the bridge deck. Traffic on S.D. Highway 11 will be maintained during both overnight traffic diversions and guided through the work zone with the use of flaggers. The entire interchange project is expected to be complete in November.
