More than a fest — how Sioux Falls says hello to winter
This piece is sponsored by Great Bear Ski Valley.
Winter is coming — and at Great Bear Ski Valley, that is something to celebrate!
The inaugural Welcome Winter Fest on Nov. 8 aims to take a misunderstood season and turn it into something to look forward to.

From chairlift views and local favorites to the contagious energy that fills the hill, it’s more than an event — it’s how Sioux Falls says hello to winter.
Here are 4 reasons you should head to Great Bear from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 8 to celebrate the start of winter:
1. Experience Sioux Falls, all in one place
Welcome Winter Fest brings together the best of Sioux Falls in a single day. From local vendors such as Spoke-N-Sport, Great Outdoor Store, Jacobson Plaza and Outdoor Campus, the whole day will be filled with reminders of just how special our community is. This is your chance to connect with the people and local businesses that help make Sioux Falls a vibrant place to live.
2. Get geared up for the cold
Shop new and used gear at the Ski Swap during Welcome Winter Fest! A variety of skis, snowboards, clothing and more will be for sale.

Earn some extra cash by selling your used items. Register online in advance at greatbearpark.com. Plus, learn about the best cold weather gear from local vendors. There’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing.
3. Great Bear is more than just a hill, it’s a gathering place
Great Bear has always been more than a place to just ski, snowboard or tube — it’s where Sioux Falls residents and visitors come together in all seasons. At Welcome Winter Fest, grab lunch with the family from 605 Island Guy food truck, and hang in the lodge with your friends while enjoying a bloody mary.
4. Make memories with your loved ones
Whether it’s your first time at Great Bear or you’re a longtime season passholder, each visit to the park is the chance to make memories. Ride the chairlift with your kids, and enjoy the trees changing colors during Welcome Winter Fest. Free rides will be offered from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
If you usually wish winter away, now is your time to see it from an all-new perspective — and maybe even fall in love with it. Welcome Winter Fest is all about rediscovering what makes winter so special. It’s not just about snow and cold. It’s about coming together and celebrating the season!
