Inside a historic former elementary school in the heart of Sioux Falls is a place that has become a beacon of support and empowerment for individuals facing unique challenges.

From the renamed Longfellow Center, DakotAbilities delivers Meaningful Day Services to more than 130 adults with physical and developmental disabilities.

“Everyone deserves to live their life on their terms, to spend time with people they enjoy participating in the same kinds of activities you and I do. We advocate for inclusion, working at community and state levels to ensure the quality of life will continue to improve for adults with disabilities,” executive director Nathan Stallinga said.

“We have numerous community partners, such as the Midco Aquatic Center, Trent Farm and Washington Pavilion. We appreciate those partnerships and the work they do with us so the people we support can enjoy all that our community has to offer.”

Since the 1960s, Sioux Falls-based DakotAbilities has been dedicated to fostering independence, inclusion and an enriched quality of life for the people it supports.

To begin 2024, the nonprofit introduced a new mission statement to communicate the heart and soul of its purpose and its direction for the future:

“Together, we create a warm and welcoming community enriching the lives of those we support.”

As one of 20 Community Support Providers in South Dakota, DakotAbilities sets itself apart by providing 24-hour access to nursing care and by being “intentionally small,” currently supporting 136 adults. This powerful combination allows staff to care for individuals with the highest levels of medical needs.

All of DakotAbilities’ residential homes in Minnehaha County are staffed around the clock, offering nursing care and physical habilitation services.

“The health, safety and welfare of the people we support is our No. 1 priority,” Stallinga said. “That builds the foundation to help people move toward finding fulfillment through Meaningful Day Services.”

Here’s a closer look at DakotAbilities today:

Services offered: DakotAbilities offers various services tailored to meet the diverse needs of adults with disabilities. From residential housing to employment support, volunteer opportunities and engaging day programs, the organization provides a comprehensive approach to enhance the overall well-being and development of people supported.

Person-centered approach: DakotAbilities has an unwavering commitment to a person-centered approach. Recognizing the individuality of each person, the nonprofit tailors its services to meet specific needs, preferences and aspirations, ensuring a customized and meaningful support system.

Community involvement: Beyond the walls of Longfellow, DakotAbilities actively participates in the local community. Through strategic partnerships, collaborations and community engagement initiatives, the organization strives to break down barriers and promote inclusivity for everyone.

Staff and expertise: Behind the scenes, DakotAbilities boasts a team of dedicated professionals who bring expertise, compassion and commitment to their roles. Their collective efforts contribute significantly to the organization’s success in delivering high-quality care and support.

Advocacy and awareness: DakotAbilities is not just a service provider – it is a champion for change. The organization actively engages in advocacy initiatives and raises awareness about issues affecting individuals with disabilities, constantly working toward building a more inclusive and understanding society.

Future goals: Addressing the increasing housing needs in Sioux Falls for adults with disabilities, DakotAbilities is building two duplexes to replace two homes built in the 1990s. By listening to those who are presently supported, each duplex will be built with privacy and personal space in mind. Private bedrooms and an increased number of bathrooms will address dignity and privacy needs, and enhance the health, safety and welfare of each person.

Success stories: The impact of DakotAbilities is best illustrated through the inspiring success stories of individuals who have flourished under its care. These stories serve as testaments to the organization’s dedication and effectiveness in creating positive transformations in the lives of those it supports.
