Jan. 5: Live music

Classically trained trumpeter and freelance musician Jonathan Jackey will perform at 8 p.m. Friday at Full Circle Book Co-op, 123 W. 10th St. Since moving to the Black Hills in 2021, Jackey has played trumpet and flugelhorn with musical groups and solo artists such as Dumpster Kat, Johnny Hastings & Stillhouse Down, Alex Massa Fat Trio, The New Music Ensemble of the Black Hills, Jimmy Ray and the Stingers, Pearl Oakes, Blue Collar Brass Band, Sivan Hoch, Tanner Johns Band, Library Advocate, Leslie Cline Quartet and Joshua Boone.

Jan. 6: Chili cook-off

Altered Species Ales in the Western Mall will host part one of a chili cookoff at noon Saturday. It will continue until the chili runs out. Stop in and get a free taste of four chilis, then vote for your favorite. There’s a new competition every Saturday this month, with the four weekly winners facing off for the title in February.

Jan. 6-15: Pad Party

Note: The drop-off event on Jan. 15 has been cancelled for weather, but the drive has been extended through Jan. 20.

The Pad Party is working on its 14th menstrual product drive to benefit The Banquet and Promising Futures Fund. The drive will be from Saturday through Jan. 15, culminating with a drop-off event at The Source Coffee Roastery + Taproom, 421 N. Phillips Ave. This effort is part of MLK Day of Service projects in communities across the nation. The Pad Party collects pads, tampons and incontinence products to be redistributed to local shelters, organizations supporting women and families, and Title I schools in Sioux Falls.

In 13 years, almost a half-million products and thousands of dollars have been donated to The Banquet and Promising Futures Fund. The Pad Party has raised $4,500 that was distributed to 14 schools in the Sioux Falls School District via the Promising Futures Fund. New this year, Downtown Sioux Falls Rotary Club will conduct a product drive in January. Rotary Club of Sioux Falls West raised over $4,000 during a raffle fundraiser in November.

Pads, tampons, liners and incontinence products can be dropped inside designated boxes at the following businesses:

  • The Source, 421 N Phillips Ave.
  • Elegant Mommy, 207 W. 37th St.
  • The Breaks Coffee Roasting Co., 311 E. 12th St.
  • Sioux Falls Food Co+op, 410 W. 18th St.
  • Look’s Marketplace, 500 E. 69th St.

Financial contributions can be made to The Pad Party several ways:

  • Promising Futures Fund, via the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation, 200 N.
Cherapa Place, Sioux Falls, SD 57104

MLK Day drop-off event details

Jan. 6 and 7: White elephant parties

Receive something for Christmas that you’d like to get rid of — we mean, share with someone else? Come to the white elephant party at Walters Hi-Ho Tavern, 1014 E. Eighth St., at 5 p.m. Saturday. Bring a gift to swap, or just come for a good time.

Can’t make that one? Cheap Shots Sports Grill, 47056 271st St., will host a gift exchange Sunday. Registration is from 1 to 2 p.m. with the gift exchange from 2 to 4. Rules are no new gifts, bring a gift wrapped or in a bag up to a $20 value and wear an ugly sweater and you might win a prize.

Jan. 7: Cathedral tour

Fifty years ago, the area around St. Joseph Cathedral became the first officially designated historic district in South Dakota. The residents who live there now are planning a year filled with activities, and the first one is  Sunday. At 1 p.m. longtime resident Mary Glenski will give a tour of the Cathedral, joined by Dave Kuhl on his bagpipe. The event is free and will start in the sanctuary.

Jan. 7: Watch parties

Can’t make it to the SDSU championship game in person? It won’t be hard to find a watch party where you can join other Jackrabbit fans as the South Dakota State University football team meets the University of Montana for the FCS Championship. The doors open at noon Sunday at WoodGrain Brewing Co. for the 1 p.m. game.

Another option: Mega Strong Fitness has partnered with Sean Larsen of EXP Realty and Meadowland Financial for a watch party starting at 12:30 p.m. in the Shenanigans Sports Bar & Grill party room. There will be appetizers. Please RSVP if you plan to attend.

If you’re an American Legion member, veteran or active military, come to Post 15 at 1700 W. Russell St. for a watch party that starts at noon. Food will be served for a freewill offering, and there will be a cash bar. Come a little early for the Post 15 pancake breakfast from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

Jan. 8: Doggie drive-thru

Chick-fil-A Empire Place, 4005 W. 41st St., will host its second annual Dogs in the Drive-Thru celebration Monday. Bring your pups through the drive-thru between 5 and 7 p.m. and receive a free chicken nugget for your pup. The first 100 dogs also will receive a free Chick-fil-A dog bandana. Your dog must be present in the car. Bandanas are while supplies last, but all dogs are guaranteed a nugget unless otherwise specified.
