Road Report: April 17, 2023
Construction season is here, so we’re back with our weekly look at what projects are done, where you’ll find traffic impacts and what’s scheduled next.
What’s underway
Foss Avenue: Work began April 12 to repair damaged curb and gutter and to upgrade the accessible curb ramps on Foss Avenue between Sixth Street and Arrowhead Parkway. Traffic will be maintained at all times in both directions. This work is expected to be completed in three weeks.
Solberg Avenue: The outside northbound lane on Solberg Avenue closed at 58th Street on April 13 to allow crews to repair sidewalk in the area. This work is expected to be complete in about one week.
Unity Bridge: Work continues on the Unity Bridge and Sixth Street project in downtown Sioux Falls.

The bridge demolition is complete, and work on underground utilities has started.

Because of shallow bedrock downtown, a unique feature of this project is a joint utility trench that will contain nearly 20 conduits for various public and private utilities.

Preparatory work for reconstructing the bridge also is in progress.

41st and Bahnson: The permanent traffic signals have been installed at 41st Street and Bahnson Avenue after a long delay because of supply chain issues.

The city is still waiting on electronic components to make the signals operate more efficiently. Those won’t be delivered for a few weeks yet.
What’s next
57th Street: Beginning today, 57th Street from Veterans Parkway to Six Mile Road will be closed to allow crews to reconstruct the street.

Work on this project includes grading, underground utilities, concrete surfacing, sidewalks, a center median and street lighting to expand 57th from a rural gravel road to a four-lane urban roadway.

This work is scheduled to be complete this fall.
33rd and Western: Beginning today, the eastbound through lane on 33rd Street and the northbound through lane on Western Avenue will be closed at the intersection to allow crews to perform curb ramp and sidewalk repairs. Traffic will be maintained in the turn lanes. In the upcoming weeks, the location of the lane closures at the intersection will change as the curb ramps and sidewalks are repaired at this intersection. At a minimum, one lane of traffic in each direction will remain open at all times. This work is scheduled to be complete in three weeks.
Cliff Avenue: Beginning today, the outside northbound lane on Cliff Avenue will be closed between First and Second streets to allow crews to work on electric lines. Work is expected to be complete in three days.
41st and Sycamore: Beginning Wednesday, the permanent traffic signals will be installed at 41st Street and Sycamore Avenue after a long delay because of supply chain issues. Various lane closures will be in place as the signals are installed at each corner. This work is expected to be completed in one day.

The permanent striping from last year’s project also has been taking place periodically and will continue to occur periodically over the next few weeks until all permanent striping has been completed. Various lane closures will be in place as this work is completed as well.
Cliff Avenue: Beginning Thursday, the outside southbound lane on Cliff Avenue will be closed between 10th Street and Fairfax Avenue to allow crews to perform sidewalk repairs. Traffic will be directed to the inside lane. This work is expected to be complete in one week.
