First-year teacher: Role is ‘a dream come true’
This paid piece is sponsored by Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools.
Teaching with purpose in a faith-based environment is how Ellie Richards, a third-grade teacher at St. Michael Elementary School, describes her work.
Richards is nearly finished with her first year of teaching and has a lot to say about her experience. Here, in her own words, is what she has found being part of Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools:

Are you a passionate educator seeking a fulfilling teaching experience that goes beyond academics? Look no further than the opportunity awaiting you at Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools. Allow me, Ellie Richards, a first-year teacher, to share my journey and why teaching in our Catholic school system is a dream come true.

I grew up attending a Catholic school, and returning to teach in one feels like coming home. It’s a privilege to guide students on their faith journey while nurturing my own. At Bishop O’Gorman, merging personal faith with professional practice is not just encouraged — it’s celebrated.
One of the valuable aspects of teaching here is the unwavering support from both colleagues and administrators. Whether you need advice, a helping hand or simply someone to share ideas with, there’s always a supportive network ready to assist. This camaraderie fosters a collaborative environment where everyone thrives. The support that I’ve received this first year, not only from my co-teacher but the principal and the whole system, is truly amazing.

As teachers, we are provided with comprehensive resources, training and mentorship, making it a smooth transition into the classroom. The opportunity to educate and pray with my students daily is profoundly impactful. I did not realize how meaningful spending time each day with my students praying and reflecting on our relationship with the Lord would be. Witnessing their spiritual growth alongside academic progress is a privilege like no other.
Everyone here wants me to succeed as a teacher and also have the students be equally successful. I am excited to wake up every morning and come to school. Welcoming students into a safe, nurturing environment where they are challenged and encouraged to grow is immensely rewarding.

Our students embrace challenges, appreciating the opportunity for personal and academic development. There’s not a morning where I don’t look forward to greeting my students at the door, and having the energy level to match my students is great.

As educators in a Catholic school, we have the unique opportunity to model Christ-like behavior in every interaction. Through our actions and words, we guide students to become disciples of Christ, instilling values that will last a lifetime. In our faith-based system, we integrate conversations about faith seamlessly into our curriculum, fostering a holistic approach to education.

While teaching, I’m able to emphasize a faith perspective on many topics discussed that otherwise would not be allowed in other school systems. This empowers us to nurture the whole person, equipping students with a strong foundation to navigate life’s challenges with grace and resilience.

If you’re seeking a rewarding teaching experience where you can make a difference in the lives of students while deepening your own faith, Bishop O’Gorman Catholic Schools is the place for you. Join our team, and embark on a journey where every day is an opportunity to inspire, educate and empower the leaders of tomorrow.
